Kirinyaga gubernatorial aspirant Wangui Ngirici has dismissed claims that she was dismissed from her position as chairperson of the Kenya Seed Company, insisting that she voluntarily resigned to concentrate on her political ambitions.

Speaking during a meet-the-people tour in Ndia constituency on Friday, May 1, 2026, Ngirici clarified that her decision to step down was informed by her desire to focus on her political ambitions ahead of next year’s general elections.

This is despite a dismissal letter dated 30 April 2026 directing her immediate removal as director and chairperson of the board, already circulating in the public domain.

Nikaskia mnataka nikuje hapa. Tuongee maneno ya kuja nikuwe Gavana wa Kirinyaga, and I will give my full concentration to the Kirinyaga people. Ndio on the 27th nikasema imetosha, wacha nitoke nitii vile wanakirinyaga wamesema,” she said.

Ngirici, who is eyeing the top seat in Kirinyaga County, noted that balancing the demands of a national corporate leadership role and an intensive political campaign would not have been practical.

The former lawmaker reiterated her commitment to engaging voters on key development issues affecting the county, saying her focus now shifts entirely to building a strong campaign ahead of the elections.

Ngirici’s contribution to the Kenya seed

She, however, pointed out that she saved the Kenya Seed Company from collapsing, saying that it was about to be privatised by the time she joined the company.

Walikuwa mpaka wameiweka kwa magazeti ndio iuzwe. So in my capacity, I was able to move Kenya Seed Company from producing 18 million kilograms of seeds to now producing 70 million kilograms of seed,” she said

The former Kirinyaga woman representative has vowed to make the county great if elected during next year’s general elections.

This will be her second attempt for the gubernatorial seat, following her defeat during the 2022 elections, where she lost to Governor Ann Waiguru.

Ngirici is among a few aspirants who have come up and declared interest in running for the top office of the agrarian county ahead of incumbent Governor Ann Waiguru’s end of her 10-year reign.

Others in the race include Kirinyaga Senator Kamau Murango and Kirinyaga Central MP Gachoki Gitari.
