Advocate Ndegwa Njiru has come to the defence of Nairobi Senator and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, who is staring at an ouster in the Orange party.

Taking to his official X account in the wee hours of Monday, January 5, 2025, Njiru argued that Sifuna will still retain his seat as the Nairobi Senator even if he joins the United Opposition.

“Sifuna will still retain his seat if he joins the United Opposition,” Njiru wrote on X.

He went ahead to claim that remaining in ODM as it is at the moment will be disastrous to Sifuna, arguing that Nairobi has always been an opposition stronghold.

“Actually, it’s disastrous for Sen. Sifuna to remain in ODM and still think of retaining his seat. Nairobi is the opposition’s strong,” Njiru stated.

Sifuna’s presence in Murang’a

Sifuna’s recent appearance at the funeral of Embakasi North MP James Gakuya’s mother in Murang’a, where he joined former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and other United Opposition leaders, seems to have triggered a fresh push to oust him as the ODM party secretary general.

During the funeral, Sifuna attacked some of the ODM bigwigs, accusing National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed of sabotaging the late Orange party leader Raila Odinga’s 2022 presidential campaigns.

His fate as the ODM Secretary General now appears sealed, with the party’s National Central Committee set to meet later this week to deliberate a proposal to replace him, with the majority of leaders reportedly backing his removal, as some propose Narok Senator Ledama Olekina as a possible replacement.

Cherargei hints at Sifuna’s ouster

While hinting at a possible disciplinary action against Sifuna, Nandi Senator Cherargei claimed that ODM is set to remove him as Secretary-General within the week.

He further claimed that plans are underway in the Senate to strip Sifuna of his position as Deputy Minority Whip, effectively sidelining him from the party’s parliamentary leadership.

“This week, ODM will remove him as the Secretary General, in the Senate, we shall remove him from deputy minority whip, and he will be free to join saboteurs of Broad-based government,” Cherargei stated.
