Advocate Ndegwa Njiru has outlined his reasons for seeking the Kirinyaga Senate seat in the 2027 General Election.

Appearing on a local podcast on Monday, December 8, 2025, the lawyer, who previously contested the seat in 2022 under the Jubilee Party, said his decision is driven by a desire to contribute meaningfully to national development and strengthen legislative oversight.

Njiru stated that he is guided strictly by the law and believes Parliament requires high-quality legislators capable of providing effective oversight on government operations and ensuring counties adhere to the principles of devolution.

He argued that Kenya needs competent voices in the Senate to properly monitor resource use and push for accountability both at the national and county levels.

“I want to be a senator because I want to make my contribution to building this country. Okay? I am a strict adherent to the law, and I believe that we need quality materials in Parliament to oversee government, oversee a spillage in the Senate and in the counties, and make sure that Kenyans realise the intention of devolution,” Ndwegwa said.

He added that his goal is to reinforce what he described as the voices of reason in the Senate, referencing leaders from Nairobi, Nyamira, and Kisii whose work he believes sets a high standard.

According to Njiru, such leaders must be supported by equally capable legislators, noting that effective oversight depends on sharp, knowledgeable individuals who can match the quality already present.

Ready to face Waiguru

Njiru also addressed reports that outgoing Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru is considering a bid for the same seat. He said he is fully prepared to face her, arguing that she is not equal to the task.

“I’m ready to face her. She is not my equal. She’s not equal to the task. She does not understand what legislation is,” he said.

Njiru claimed that Waiguru has not demonstrated an understanding of legislation or the legislative role of county governments throughout her tenure, insisting that this shortcoming makes her unfit for the Senate.

“If she does, and if she understands, would we have seen her effects for the last seven years or eight years now? She does not understand the aspect of legislation,” Ndegwa added.

The advocate emphasised the need for Parliament to be composed of high-calibre lawmakers, citing senators such as Edwin Sifuna, Okong’o Omogeni, and Richard Onyonka as examples of leaders who embody the legislative quality required.

He further noted that the current Kirinyaga Senator Kamau Murango has also shown commendable effort in executing his mandate.

Njiru concluded by criticising counties represented by what he termed low-quality legislators, pointing to Embu Senator as an example, where he questioned the competency of the sitting senator.

He maintained that Kenya cannot afford to have leaders lacking basic legislative ability, especially at a time when oversight and accountability are most needed.
