Lawyer Willis Evans Otieno has advised President William Ruto against seeking re-election in the 2027 General Election.

Using X on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, Otieno said Ruto should retire instead of confronting voters at the ballot.

He argued that the President risked receiving misleading political advice from people benefiting from his administration.

“If I were William Ruto’s political adviser, I would tell him something no one in his inner circle has the courage to say: Don’t run in 2027,” Otieno wrote on X.

Otieno warns Ruto against inner-circle praise

Otieno said politics punishes leaders who fail to recognise changes in public sentiment.

“Politics is unforgiving. It does not reward stubbornness; it punishes it,” he stated.

According to Otieno, Ruto’s greatest political threat was not the opposition. He said the President risked believing favourable messages from allies protecting their interests.

“The greatest danger facing you is not the opposition; it is the illusion created by those who survive by telling you what you want to hear,” he wrote.

“They clap at every speech, celebrate every rally, and call every crowd ‘historic.’ They are not measuring public opinion; they are protecting their paychecks.”

Otieno also cautioned Ruto against interpreting the visibility and privileges of the presidency as evidence of electoral support.

“Do not mistake the privileges of office for popularity. A convoy is not love. A State House reception is not public approval,” he stated.

“A crowd assembled by power is not the same as a nation willing to vote for you.”

Otieno issues ballot box warning

The lawyer said leaders must distinguish between the information presented by their advisers and the message coming from voters.

“Every ruler eventually reaches the point where the mirror tells one story and the people tell another. Wise leaders believe the people. Proud leaders believe the mirror,” Otieno wrote.

He asked Ruto to protect the political legacy he has built over more than three decades.

“You have spent more than thirty years climbing to the summit of Kenyan politics. Don’t spend your final chapter proving that the hardest fall is the one from the highest mountain,” he stated.

Otieno said remaining in the presidential race could eventually stop appearing courageous.

“There comes a point when remaining in the race stops looking like courage and starts looking like an inability to read the times,” he said.

He concluded by advising Ruto to leave elective politics voluntarily.

“Leave while retirement is still a choice. If you insist on staying, don’t be surprised when the ballot box becomes the harshest political adviser you have ever ignored.”

Ruto is constitutionally eligible to seek a second and final presidential term in 2027.
