Human rights activist and advocate Ndegwa Njiru has called on former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to channel the spirit of Kenya’s legendary freedom fighters Dedan Kimathi and Musa Mwariama as he returns home, urging him to champion the people’s rights and stand against oppression.

In a post shared on social media on Thursday, August 21, 2025, Njiru said,

“Rigathi Gachagua, as you return home, let Dedan Kimathi’s fire and Musa Mwariama’s resolve flow through you. Summon the steel of Kimathi and the courage of Mwariama. Let us defy oppression and stand for the people every day. Let us defy, resist, and redeem the people’s hope!”

Njiru’s message comes at a time when citizens are calling for leaders who can uphold justice, resist corruption, and remain steadfast in defending public interest. By invoking the legacy of Kimathi and Mwariama, Njiru reminded Gachagua of the enduring fight against tyranny that shaped Kenya’s history and the importance of courage in leadership.

Political analysts say Njiru’s post is both symbolic and motivational, encouraging leaders to draw lessons from Kenya’s liberation heroes to tackle contemporary challenges. Dedan Kimathi, a leader of the Mau Mau uprising, and Musa Mwariama, a prominent leader of the Meru freedom struggle, are celebrated for their resilience, strategic thinking, and unwavering commitment to Kenya’s independence.

Njiru emphasised that leadership today requires the same determination and bravery. “We must defy, resist, and redeem the people’s hope,” he wrote, urging Gachagua to prioritise the welfare of ordinary citizens and challenge systems that perpetuate inequality and injustice.

Residents and political observers have lauded Njiru’s call, seeing it as a reminder that Kenya’s political leaders must be rooted in principles of courage, integrity, and service to the people. By drawing inspiration from historical heroes, the message reinforces the idea that transformative leadership is built on both vision and moral resolve.

As Gachagua resumes his public duties, Njiru’s message underscores the expectation that Kenya’s leaders embody the fire, steel, and courage of the nation’s freedom fighters—using their legacy to guide decisions that positively impact citizens and strengthen democratic governance in the country.
