Political commentator and lawyer Ndegwa Njiru has launched a scathing attack on President William Ruto’s administration over its handling of the Ebola threat, accusing the health cabinet secretary and the head of state of treating the health and safety of Kenyans with alarming recklessness.

In a statement on his X handle on Thursday, June 3, 2026, Njiru criticised Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale and President Ruto, saying that their public remarks on the Ebola situation expose what he described as “abracadabra” in the government’s response to the deadly disease.

“Listening to CS Duale and his master Ruto speak on the Ebola saga, you quickly realise just how much abracadabra is being played with the health and safety of Kenyans. Kenyans, let this serve as a bitter lesson on what happens when a country elects fraudsters! “Njiru stated.

As concerns over regional Ebola outbreaks continue, the government’s handling of the situation has remained under intense scrutiny from both political leaders and the public.

Duale on Ebola alert response

The sentiments from the attorney come hours after the health cabinet secretary, Aden Duale, confirmed that the country’s national surveillance system has probed 22 suspected Ebola alerts across nine counties, all of which have tested negative.

Duale said this in an interview on a local TV station on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, where he appeared to address Kenya’s Ebola preparedness and response measures.

The CS explained that the alerts were reported from Nairobi, Kiambu, Uasin Gishu, Nyeri, Nakuru, Nyamira, West Pokot, Kisumu and Bungoma counties.

“The national surveillance system has captured and investigated 22 suspected alerts from across the country. All of them have tested negative. These alerts were reported from Nairobi, Kiambu, Uasin Gishu, Nyeri, Nakuru, Nyamira, West Pokot, Kisumu and Bungoma,” he said.

Duale added that three of the alerts were reported in the last 24 hours and were also confirmed negative after investigation.

“In the last 24 hours, three alerts from Nairobi, Uasin Gishu and Bungoma were investigated, and they were confirmed negative,” Duale stated.

Duale rules out border closure

Aden Duale further ruled out the closure of Kenya’s borders despite ongoing Ebola outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda, affirming that the government will instead strengthen surveillance, screening, quarantine measures, and contact tracing in line with World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines.

Duale emphasised that Kenya’s response is being guided by international public health protocols rather than restrictive border closures.

“We are not going to close our borders; it is against WHO rules. We’ll screen and do contact tracing instead. There are some Kenyans who came from Congo-Brazzaville, and we’ve quarantined them for seven days. To make sure the incubation period is over and every morning and evening they are checked,” Duale said.
