Nairobi needs me: Moses Kuria defends his bid to lead the city
Former President William Ruto’s economic advisor, Moses Kuria, has stated that Nairobi County needs him more than he needs it.
Speaking to local media stations on Monday, December 15, 2025, Kuria described Nairobi County as being in a state of disarray that only he can resolve, emphasising that the city cannot function without his intervention. He went on to assert that while he can survive without Nairobi, the county cannot do without him.
He drew parallels with Kiambu, where he unsuccessfully ran for governor in 2022, noting that the county remains in a mess he had projected and aimed to address at the time.

Kuria, who has declared his intention to run for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat in 2027, reiterated that he can survive without holding the office of governor, but Nairobi cannot. He added that if the city believes there is a better candidate than him, then it is free to pursue that choice.
He stated, “I don’t need Nairobi; Nairobi needs me. I can survive without being governor. I tried to be the governor of Kiambu. I am not worse—Kiambu is worse. I am just trying to save Nairobi, and if Nairobi thinks it has a better person, so be it.”

Kuria has been open about his gubernatorial ambitions for some time. He had previously indicated that Madaraka MP George Aladwa, who is also eyeing the Nairobi seat, would be his running mate. However, Aladwa later denied any such arrangement, claiming that top government officials had warned him against associating with Kuria.
His 2026 plan
Kuria also made it clear that in 2026, he intends to limit his political activities, focusing instead on ensuring that Kenya has peaceful elections in 2027. He added that both he and his party will prioritise calming political tensions in the lead-up to the elections.

‘2026 will the year which i will do as little politics as possible. We have this discussion as we head to Christmas next year. I am a political animal, and in 2027 we have an election and I am a party leader with many elected leaders. My commitment and that of my party is to make sure we have a peaceful election,’ he added
