MP Jared Okello explains need for ODM–UDA merger ahead of 2027 polls
Nyando Constituency Member of Parliament (MP) Jared Okello has explained why the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is engaging in talks with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ahead of the 2027 general election.
Okello said the discussions are a strategic move, emphasising that no single political party can carry the entire nation alone.
Speaking during a morning interview with a local TV station on Thursday, March 5, 2026, Okello explained that the decision to open talks with UDA is rooted in practicality rather than any ideological compromise.
“We have expressed the intent to negotiate with UDA to work together in 2027 because, as it stands, no political party can galvanise the entire nation and run away with power,” Okello said.

The ODM lawmaker further said that any alliance would aim to enhance its party’s ability to influence government policy while maintaining its parliamentary strength and internal cohesion.
ODM-UDA discussions
The sentiments from the legislator come amid high-level discussions between Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and United Democratic Alliance (UDA) representatives, focusing on exploring areas of electoral and strategic cooperation.
ODM’s party leader, Oburu Oginga, has publicly encouraged dialogue with UDA, describing it as a step toward national unity and stronger governance rather than simply political convenience.

Okello reiterated the assurance to party members that ODM is approaching the negotiations cautiously, ensuring that the party’s identity and parliamentary representation are preserved.
Sifuna’s opposing faction
The Linda Mwananchi faction within the ODM party has raised concerns about the potential dilution of the party’s agenda. Led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, the faction has been opposed to the ODM-UDA merger, saying that it is not in the best interest of the party
Okello, however, has insisted that collaboration could expand political influence, strengthen unity, and position the party for a more impactful role in shaping Kenya’s future.
As talks continue, ODM leaders say they are focused on securing clear terms that protect the party’s interests, including fair representation and retention of key parliamentary seats.
