Moses Kuria: Powerful forces pressured Aladwa to abandon Nairobi governor alliance

By , December 3, 2025

Former Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has accused unnamed holders of extremely powerful offices of coercing Makadara MP George Aladwa into abandoning a proposed political alliance for the 2027 Nairobi gubernatorial race.

Kuria made the claims in a post on X dated December 3, 2025, referencing a meeting he cites took place the previous evening.

“George Aladwa was summoned last evening by holders of extremely powerful offices and ordered to denounce our agreement on Nairobi Governor ticket. I respect his decision. I want to tell those forces to relax. I want to be Governor of Nairobi to save this collapsing city. But it’s not life and death affair for me. Again by doing this you have let the cat out of the bag too early. Now we know your 2027 game plan. Thanks a million!” he wrote.

Alliance announcement unravels

The dispute follows Kuria’s announcement on December 1, 2025, unveiling Aladwa as his preferred running mate.

Kuria, leader of the Chama Cha Kazi party, had circulated a campaign poster highlighting what he described as a non-ethnic, non-partisan partnership aimed at addressing Nairobi’s long-standing challenges.

“Not because of our tribes. Not because of our parties. Because we care for Nairobi. Because we understand what Nairobians are going through. Because we have local, regional and global networks to fix Nairobi. Because we have many years of combined leadership and managerial experience. Because we are not tribal. Because we have what it takes to make Nairobi work again.”

Kuria declared his own gubernatorial bid in October 2025, citing inspiration from President William Ruto’s remarks on Nairobi’s deteriorating condition.

“Dear President William Ruto. Today you spoke to my heart. Like Prime Minister Baba Raila Amolo Odinga has told me countless times, Nairobi cannot continue to be the city of filth, garbage and incompetence. I have heard your cry. That is why I will offer myself to be the Governor of the great County of Nairobi in 2027. I will fix Nairobi,” he posted at the time.

Aladwa insists on ODM

But Aladwa swiftly dismissed Kuria’s proposal. Speaking on December 2, 2025, during the launch of Raila Odinga’s classrooms in Buruburu, the ODM Nairobi chairman reiterated his position. “I have said that I will not be Moses Kuria’s deputy; I will be vying for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat under the ODM party in 2027,” he said.

He added that if Kuria insists on running, they would face off on the ballot, emphasizing his experience as Nairobi’s longest-serving politician and former mayor.

Aladwa joins a growing list of aspirants seeking to unseat Governor Johnson Sakaja in 2027, including Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and businesswoman Agnes Kagure.
