Moses Kuria changes tune, welcomes President Ruto to Nyeri

By , January 11, 2026

Former President William Ruto’s economic adviser, Moses Kuria, has changed his recent tone after attacking President William Ruto and has now welcomed him ahead of his planned visit to Nyeri County, Chinga Ward, on Sunday, January 11, 2025.

In a statement shared on his social media pages on the eve of the President’s visit to Nyeri County, the home county and political backyard of Ruto’s former deputy and now top critic, Rigathi Gachagua, Kuria shared a poster featuring himself and the President, accompanied by a welcoming message to the county. President Ruto is set to grace the grand opening and dedication of the ACL Kariki Plaza in Othaya Chinga Ward.

The poster has generated mixed reactions online, with government-allied politicians such as Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei applauding Kuria’s move and urging him to join the “TUTAM” movement.

Moses Kuria criticising Ruto

For some time, Moses Kuria has been heavily critical of the President, expressing little trust in the current regime. Despite his sharp criticism of the state, he has not openly declared allegiance to the opposition. At one point, he hinted at joining the united opposition camp but later changed his stance and became heavily reliant on Rigathi Gachagua.

Recently, during an interview, Kuria, who until July 7, 2025, was a close ally of the President and served in his government, revealed that he resigned from his role as economic adviser due to his dissatisfaction with how the government handled the Gen Z protests during Saba Saba Day, where several young people lost their lives.

He stated that after the incident, he decided he could not be part of a government that handles protests in such a manner, which informed his decision to resign.

Rigathi Gachagua has, in recent months, been openly critical of Moses Kuria, at one point labelling him a stooge of President William Ruto.

He also described Kuria’s Chama Cha Kazi party, which fronted former Evuore Member of Embu County Assembly (MCA) Duncan Mbui in the November 27 Mbeere North by-election, as an appendage of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), saying that it was being used by the state to divide opposition votes.

Kuria’s gubernatorial interests

Moses Kuria’s apparent change of tune and renewed show of support for President William Ruto come at a time when he has also declared interest in the Nairobi County gubernatorial race in 2027.

He has stated that it is Nairobi’s turn, even naming Makadara MP George Aladwa, who is also interested in the seat, as his preferred deputy and running mate.

Kuria insisted that the bid needs him, not the other way round, dismissing what he termed a long-standing narrative that anyone vying to lead Nairobi County must be a rabble-rouser, stating that he does not possess such attributes.
