Morara: Karua might soon ditch Gachagua-Kalonzo-led United Opposition
Political activist and civic educator Morara Kebaso has hinted at a possible exit of PLP leader Martha Karua from the United Opposition.
While speaking during an interview on the Iko Nini Podcast aired on Saturday, January 25, 2026, Morara predicted a possible fallout within the United Opposition that could lead to her exit from the outfit as 2027 nears.
Morara, who at one time was also part of the United Opposition and even held several boardroom meetings and graced the PLP NDC in the company of opposition leaders, stated that within the outfit, they are not concerned about issues bedevilling Kenyans, but rather their own interests.

He further stated that for one to be part of the opposition, they must have backing from their community – something Morara claimed Karua might be lacking.
He went on to explain that when the formation becomes formidable, they will ask her what she brings to the table, and if what she is banking on is women’s support, something Morara believes is not significant since women do not necessarily vote along gender lines.
He emphasised that it is at this point that Karua may be forced to walk out of the opposition formation.
“Martha Karua might soon find the United Opposition a place not to stay, because when the conversation becomes real, they will ask her, ‘How many votes are you bringing from your tribe?’” he asked.
Wanjigi United Opposition’s exit
He further stated that just like business mogul Jimmy Wanjigi – who is also eyeing the presidency and who at one time appeared to be part of the formation, joining them in various public forums – ditched them, Karua will likely do the same.

“The way the United Opposition thinks is that you can’t say you are bringing women; that’s not something they listen to, so she is going to leave the same way Wanjigi left,” he said.
Morara also predicted a mass exodus of principals from the outfit, saying they will leave after being told they have no votes and are unable to deliver, leaving the opposition a shell and giving President William Ruto, whom they seek to challenge in 2027, an easy run.
United Oppositions 2027 puzzle
This comes at a time when the United Opposition is trying to put its head together to see how it can position itself for 2027.
Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka recently announced that they will have a presidential candidate by the first quarter of 2027 so that Kenyans can get used to their leader.

This was opposed by Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua, who argued that announcing a presidential candidate too early would subject them to intimidation from the state, saying the opposition should not be in a hurry to name its flag bearer.
The President himself has also thrown cold water on the United Opposition, saying it is comprised of people with no agenda, only empty rhetoric and slogans.
