Methu declines to resign from UDA after DCP Secretary General appointment
By Mabonga Makhanu, May 25, 2026Nyandarua Senator John Methu has refused to resign from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) despite his appointment as the Secretary General of the DCP party.
While speaking at the party headquarters following his appointment to replace Hezron Obaga on Monday, May 26, 2026, the outspoken senator addressed growing pressure from UDA supporters who argued that his new role required him to quit his current party.
He dismissed those claims, saying that such interpretations were politically motivated and not grounded in precedent.
He further argued that political history in Kenya shows leaders have previously held party positions while still serving under different political affiliations.
Methu cited the example of President William Ruto, noting that he served as the UDA party leader designate for about two years while still serving as deputy president under the Jubilee Party, suggesting that his current situation should not be treated differently.

“I know people from UDA have started arguing that when I am secretary-general designate of a party, I am required to resign from my current party. Much as you want to give us advice, may I also remind you that it is part of history – William Ruto was the party leader designate of UDA for two years, yet he was elected Deputy President under Jubilee Party.”
While being unveiled, his party leader, Rigathi Gachagua, acknowledged the same, noting that Methu, since he is in the Senate courtesy of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party and after advice from party lawyers, will hold the Secretary General position in an acting capacity until further notice when the decision is fully ratified.
Gachagua went ahead, stating that the party will forward his name to the Registrar of Political Parties soon.
“John Methu is the designated secretary general of the DCP party; from today, he will be the DCP spokesman, and his name will soon be forwarded to the registrar of political parties for due confirmation.”
Methu’s political profile

John Methu has been a close ally of the DCP leader for the recent past.
His recent outburst during the burial of Ol Kalou MP David Kiaraho threw him into the limelight, making him enjoy a few days of clout after he openly told President William Ruto that he respects him but is not afraid of him.
This later became the soundbite of the country for days, with political analysts such as Herman Manyora stating that his speech in front of Ruto had made his political star shine brighter beyond Nyandarua County, positioning him as a possible future Mt. Kenya kingpin should Rigathi Gachagua decide to hang his boots.
