Matiang’i hints at political alliance with Sifuna ahead of 2027

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has sparked fresh political speculation after sharing a message widely interpreted as a signal of possible cooperation with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The statement came alongside photos showing the Jubilee Deputy Party Leader and 2027 presidential flag bearer warmly embracing Sifuna during the funeral of the mother of Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, an event attended by several political leaders in Kisii County.

Taking to his official X account on Friday, May 15, 2026, night, Matiang’i, who has pledged to fix the country and engage the Gen Z if he forms the government in 2027, emphasised unity, inclusivity, and a shared national agenda, saying Kenya’s future depends on cooperation among leaders committed to reform and good governance.

“For a better future for Kenya, a country governed by the rule of law, sovereignty, and inclusivity, we will work with everyone committed to helping us fix the nation,” Matiang’i captioned his photos with Sifuna.

Emerging political realignments

He added that like-minded leaders would work together to design a long-term governance framework aimed at stabilising the country.

“Together, we will draw the blueprint and lay a strong foundation for a better Kenya for present and future generations,” he stated.

The funeral brought together various leaders from across party lines, offering a rare moment of informal interaction amid heightened political positioning ahead of 2027.

While speaking during the funeral, Sifuna said that he was ready to work with Matiang’i.

Mheshimiwa Matiang’i, mimi niko tayari kama kiongozi wa Linda Mwananchi kufanya kazi na wewe,” Sifuna said as he reiterated the importance of opposition leaders joining hands in an effort to remove President William Ruto from power in 2027.

Early race to 2027 taking shape

The developments come as political formations continue to crystallise ahead of the 2027 General Election, with leaders across the spectrum seeking alliances capable of strengthening their influence.

Sifuna’s and Matiang’i’s interactions are increasingly being read as early indicators of coalition-building efforts, even when occurring in non-political settings such as funerals.

Key opposition figures such as Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka and People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua were also present.

Former Chief Justice David Maraga of the United Green Movement (UGM), who is also seeking to unseat Ruto, was also in attendance.
