Kivutha Kibwana backs Sifuna, says freedom cannot be teargassed
Former Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana has thrown his weight behind the embattled Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General Edwin Sifuna following the teargassing of the Linda Mwananchi rally at Amalemba Grounds in Kakamega.
Taking to his official X account, Kibwana declared that “no one can teargas a revolution.”
Kibwana’s remarks came in reaction to the disruption of the Sifuna-led Linda Mwananchi gathering in Kakamega, where police lobbed teargas canisters at supporters moments after Sifuna took to the podium to address them.
The incident follows a similar confrontation in Kitengela last Sunday, where members of the same brigade were also dispersed using teargas.
While hailing Siaya Governor James Orengo for supporting the emerging young voices, Kibwana urged veterans of Kenya’s Second Liberation struggle to rally behind the emerging political wave, signalling solidarity with leaders backing the Linda Mwananchi initiative.
“NO ONE CAN TEARGAS A REVOLUTION. We can smell the THIRD ECONOMIC LIBERATION.. @orengo_james Kudos for supporting the #FreshYoungTurks. May other #SecondLiberationVeterans come forth to lend a hand. Freedom is Coming. #SisiNdoSifuna n#SisiNdoBabu #SisiNdoGenZ #SisiNdoWakenya,” Kibwana wrote on X.

Sifuna teargassed
Kibwana’s remarks come hours after Sifuna was teargassed, just moments after he reached the podium to deliver his speech at the Linda Ground in Kakamega County.
Speaking on Saturday, February 21, 2026, Sifuna called out President William Ruto for spearheading the use of tear gas against residents.
At the time, Sifuna maintained that the meeting would not end despite the use of tear gas to disperse the crowd.
The teargas, however, did not stop Sifuna’s speech as the Kakamega residents braced the teargas smoke while listening to the embattled Orange Democratic Movement leader.
“Wapige ingine kama watapiga,,,,hii mkutano ni sisi tutamaliza hakuna mtu mwingine,” Sifuna said.

Sifuna’s Kakamega rally
Edwin Sifuna led the Linda Mwananchi team in drawing a sea of humanity after landing in Kakamega town for their much-anticipated rally.
Sifuna’s caravan snaked through Kakamega town en route to Amalemba Grounds, where the rally was scheduled to take place. Supporters turned out in large numbers, following the procession and chanting slogans in support of the leaders.
He was accompanied by several Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) allies, including James Orengo, Babu Owino, Caleb Amisi, Richard Onyonka, and Kakamega senatorial aspirant Brian Lishenga. Leaders from other parties also joined them, among them Jack Wamboka and Majimbo Kalasinga.
