Kawanjiku: If Hassan Omar does not resign from UDA, we will walk out

By , May 27, 2026

Kiambaa Member of Parliament John Kawanjiku has led a section of Mt Kenya United Democratic Alliance (UDA) MPs in calling for the ouster of Hassan Omar from the secretary general position, saying that if he does not resign, there will be no need for them to remain members of the ruling party.

While speaking to the media on Wednesday, May 26, 2026, Kawanjiku, backed by a section of UDA MPs, expressed anger over Hassan Omar’s remarks, saying they had given the party 48 hours to remove him from office; failure to which they would take the next course of action.

They also declined the apology issued by the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP, insisting that all they want is for him to vacate the Secretary General seat.

Kawanjiku’s demands

Kawanjiku went ahead to state that, as Kiambu leaders, they represent the people Hassan Omar was allegedly speaking ill about and profiling.

According to him, the ethnic remarks made by Omar risk plunging the country back into a situation similar to the 2002 political tensions that led to loss of lives.

“If Omar does not resign, we cannot continue being members of the UDA party,” he stated.

Laikipia Woman Representative Jane Kagiri, who was part of the press briefing, stated that if Hassan Omar does not tender his resignation letter within the next 48 hours, they will petition the party leader to invoke party organs and officially dismiss him from the position.

She further stated that, as Kiambu MPs, they support the move by the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC), which has vowed to take action against Omar, and urged the commission to continue with its investigations to the logical conclusion.

Alice Ng’ang’a’s call

Thika Town MP Alice Ng’ang’a also took a swipe at Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, who in the past made remarks during the death of the late former Prime Minister that appeared to profile the Luo community.

She noted that Kahiga took responsibility by resigning from his position as Vice Chairperson of the Council of Governors, and now wants Hassan Omar to follow suit and resign unconditionally.

She continued by stating that, as UDA members, they are uncomfortable with their community being profiled while Hassan Omar continues to serve as the party’s secretary general.
