Kasmuel explains why Ruto should not abandon UDA and vie on ODM ticket in 2027
Orange Democratic Movement Youth League member Kasmuel McOure has urged his party and the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) to forge a pre-election agreement ahead of the 2027 General Election.
In a statement shared on his social media pages on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, McOure emphasised that the two parties should collaborate through a coalition rather than dissolving individual parties to form a single entity.
“The path forward is decisiveness. We strengthen ODM by engaging in a sober, well-negotiated pre-election agreement with President Ruto, while simultaneously reinvigorating our grassroots machinery and sustaining the aggressive mobilisation that defines our political DNA. That is how serious parties mature into governing forces.” Kasmuel said.

He noted that it would be unreasonable to expect ODM to abandon its party structure, just as it would be unrealistic to expect President William Ruto to leave the political vehicle that brought him to power. Both ODM and UDA, he argued, have been shaped by history, loyalty, and institutional structures.
According to McOure, strengthening ODM cannot be achieved by asking the President to disband UDA and join ODM, nor can the party be rebuilt in the post-Baba era through ultimatums, emotional posturing, or ineffective political measures. History, he stated, shows that ambiguity has never worked in the party’s favour.
The way forward, McOure argued, is decisiveness. He stressed the importance of engaging in a sober, well-negotiated pre-election agreement with President Ruto while simultaneously reinvigorating ODM’s grassroots machinery and maintaining aggressive mobilisation.
He contended that this is how serious political parties mature into governing forces.

From a pragmatic standpoint, McOure indicated that a premeditated, clearly articulated, and publicly endorsed pre-election strategy offers ODM the best chance for future presidential success. Durable coalitions are deliberate, disciplined, and founded on shared interests, clearly defined roles, and institutional respect.
He further stated that bold decisions and unambiguous direction from ODM leadership are critical. If the party is committed to the Broad-Based Government, it must fully execute its mandate, govern responsibly, and petition the electorate for continuity based on tangible joint achievements anchored in clear structures and mutual accountability.
Descending voices
Conversely, McOure suggested that if leaders are opposed to the coalition arrangement, they should make that decision early, exit decisively, and pursue an independent path without ambiguity.
McOure argued that the long-term interests of ODM and the broader Kenyan population are best served through a constructive partnership with President Ruto that extends beyond 2027.
He stressed that the Broad-Based Government should embody the nation’s best governance practices and principles, rather than serve as a platform for competing egos or confusion.
With some top ODM leaders opposing the coalition with UDA and advocating that the party maintain a distinct opposition role, McOure emphasised that as the 2027 elections approach, ODM must prioritise clarity over nostalgia, structure over sentiment, and strategy over disorganisation.

This comes days after Siaya Senator and ODM party Leader Oburu Odinga hinted at ODM supporting Ruto in 2027.
