As Kenya prepares for the 2027 General Election, the People’s Liberation Party (PLP), led by Martha Karua, has positioned itself as a challenger to entrenched political dynasties that have long dominated the country’s political landscape.

The party’s stance was highlighted in a detailed X post on September 25, 2025, ahead of its first-ever National Delegates Conference (NDC) scheduled for September 26 at Ufungamano House.

“PLP is not a party; it is a philosophy. A radical rebirth of the Kenyan spirit. One People. One Purpose. One Term. A clean break from the addiction to dynasty and deception. We are not here to inherit the system. We are here to dismantle it.”

The post outlined the party’s creed: “One People. We reject tribal arithmetic. We are Kenyans before we are clans. One Purpose. Liberation. Not position. Not praise. One Term. No overstaying. No ego projects. Leadership is service, not inheritance.”

Grassroots philosophy

The PLP traces its origins to 2022, born out of frustrations among ordinary Kenyans with “manufactured poverty” and unfulfilled electoral promises.

Describing itself as a “philosophy” rather than a conventional party, the PLP seeks to dismantle existing political systems rather than inherit them. It draws support from youth, hustlers, thinkers, and workers, framing the NDC as a “people’s ceremony” where the previously voiceless aim to become politically influential.

“The People’s Liberation Party (PLP) was born not in boardrooms of billionaires or the smoky corridors of ethnic kingpins, but in the hearts of ordinary Kenyans who’ve had enough. Enough is Enough of the Dealers. Enough of manufactured poverty. Enough of promises that never survive the ballot.”

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka confirmed his attendance at the PLP’s NDC on September 24, 2025, at the SKM Command Centre.

He cited internal conflicts and a previous court case involving “strangers” at Jubilee’s parallel NDC as reasons for skipping that event. Musyoka also declined an invitation from ODM leader Raila Odinga for a founder members’ celebration on October 10, citing a conflicting Wiper NDC, signalling a strategic alignment with Karua and highlighting shifting dynamics within the opposition.

Mobilising youth

The PLP has actively mobilised Kenyan youth through the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, urging participation ahead of the August 2027 polls.

A September 24 statement described the ballot as the “strongest tool for change,” and criticized the Kenya Kwanza administration for economic challenges and institutional decay. This aligns with former Chief Justice David Maraga’s campaign to register five million new voters, amplifying the PLP’s outreach.

Karua reaffirmed her presidential ambitions on September 21, 2025, at PCEA Mbogori Church, stating she would compete for the opposition ticket while rejecting multi-term politics. She cited Malawi’s recent electoral accountability as a model.
