Karua: Fight for better Kenya does not begin or end with elections
By Sharon Atieno, July 21, 2026People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has said the struggle for a better Kenya extends beyond elections, insisting that commitment to justice, constitutionalism and the rights of citizens should remain a lifelong responsibility.
In a statement shared on her X account on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, Karua said her absence from elected office for more than a decade had not weakened her commitment to public service.
“For over a decade, I have not held an elected office. Yet my commitment to justice, constitutionalism, and the rights of Kenyans has never wavered,” Karua said.
She said she entered public life to serve Kenyans rather than seek status or privilege.
“I did not enter public life in search of status or privilege. I entered it to serve, and that purpose remains unchanged,” she added.
Struggle goes beyond ballot box
Karua said the pursuit of a better Kenya should not be limited to electoral contests, describing it as a continuous commitment to the people.
“The struggle for a better Kenya does not begin at the ballot box, nor does it end with an election. It is a lifelong commitment to the people,” she said.
Her remarks come as PLP intensifies preparations for the 2027 General Election through a nationwide recruitment drive targeting aspiring governors, senators, MPs, women representatives and MCAs.
The party, formerly known as NARC-Kenya, has invited aspiring leaders to seek its ticket under the slogan “Unite. Liberate. Take the Lead.”
PLP expands grassroots network
The recruitment drive is part of efforts to strengthen the party’s grassroots structures and expand its presence ahead of the 2027 polls.
PLP has recently unveiled several aspirants in Meru County and fielded candidates in recent by-elections, including the Ol Kalou parliamentary contest.
The party describes itself as a platform for leaders committed to “radical, people-centred change” and has positioned justice, accountability and constitutional governance at the centre of its political message.
Karua eyes 2027 contest
Karua has also continued to position herself as a key opposition figure ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The veteran politician has indicated her intention to challenge President William Ruto in the next presidential contest and has intensified countrywide engagements on governance, accountability and constitutional issues.
Her latest remarks suggest that, even as PLP prepares for the next election, Karua views political engagement as extending beyond the campaign period and electoral office.
