Kalonzo to CS Wandayi: We must get justice because Raila and I nearly got killed in 2023
Wiper leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka has said the country must confront past abuses, arguing that the search for justice cannot be separated from the painful experiences of those who stood with Raila Odinga during the 2023 and 2024 protests.
He spoke on Saturday, December 6, 2025, during the burial of Beryl Odinga in Bondo, where several opposition leaders gathered to console the Odinga family.
Kalonzo attended the funeral with DAP–Kenya leader Eugene Wamalwa, who earlier voiced his support for Oburu Oginga’s push to fully implement the NADCO report.
Wamalwa and Kalonzo said they were present as part of the United Opposition of Kenya to stand with the family. Wamalwa had already reminded mourners that three members of the NADCO dialogue team were present and stressed the need for justice for victims of police violence.
Kalonzo then delivered an emotional and forceful address, linking the current debate on NADCO to the long struggle for democratic reforms.
He began by reflecting on his political journey with Raila Odinga:
“Kwa sababu tumeambiwa kwamba tuangazie haswa kitendo ambacho kimetulete hapa. Lakini hivi karibuni, mimi nitazungumza juu ya Kalonzo na Raila Odinga. Ni tazungumza ili kwamba niongee initoke. Kwa sababu mimi sitavumilia kuona jamii ambayo imedulumiwa miaka yote,” he said.

He said he and Raila expected that their long fight would deliver justice for all communities.
Kalonzo recalled the history of political assassinations, naming JM Kariuki and student activism of the 1970s as moments that shaped their political consciousness.
Kalonzo demands full justice
He addressed Opiyo Wandayi directly, noting unfinished issues in NADCO.
“Tulikuwa na ye katika NADCO… One of the things we say, kwamba wale watoto waliuawa in 2023, over 73 of them… ata kabla ya Gen Z in 2024, ni lazima watoto hawa walipwe rithaa.”
He then made one of the strongest claims.
“You know… I’m waiting to see justice done. Because Raila na mimi karibu tuuawe na Martha Karua in 2023. And our people died. So we cannot… tusije tukakumbatia vitu ambavyo vita kuja kudhulumu the values.”

Kalonzo said the Odinga family’s values had guided the opposition for decades and must not be abandoned. He praised the unity within ODM, Wiper, and their allies, arguing that their cooperation had held the government to account.
Kalonzo said the opposition would continue to push for justice for victims of the 2023 and 2024 protests, alongside demands for full implementation of the NADCO report. He ended his remarks by reaffirming his long-standing bond with the Odinga family.
“The values that hold us together are so deep that they cannot be wished away… May the good Lord rest the soul of our sister Beryl in eternal peace.”
