Kalonzo launches 2027 campaign platform as opposition intensifies bid to challenge Ruto

By , June 6, 2026

Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka has formally launched his 2027 presidential campaign platform, signalling a major step in the opposition’s efforts to unseat President William Ruto in the next General Election.

The Saturday, June 6, 2026, launch comes amid growing momentum within opposition ranks, although leaders have yet to agree on a single presidential candidate to face Ruto. Kalonzo used the event to outline his vision for the country, positioning himself as a unifying figure capable of steering Kenya through economic and governance challenges.

His campaign rollout coincides with fresh opinion polls that place him among the leading contenders in what is shaping up to be a highly competitive race.

According to the latest Trends and Insights for Africa (TIFA) survey conducted between May 2 and May 11, 2026, President William Ruto remains the frontrunner in presidential preference ratings with 24 per cent support.

Kalonzo follows closely in second place with 19 per cent, ahead of former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, who garnered 14 per cent support.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna was ranked fourth with 10 per cent, while former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua secured 9 per cent. Embakasi East MP Babu Owino registered 2 per cent support.

The findings suggest that the contest remains wide open, with 15 per cent of respondents undecided. An additional 3 per cent backed other candidates, while another 3 per cent declined to state a preference, highlighting the fluid nature of the political landscape ahead of 2027.

No candidate has established a dominant national lead, making coalition-building and strategic alliances crucial in determining the eventual outcome of the election.

The survey also showed strong regional support bases among leading contenders. Kalonzo enjoyed overwhelming backing among Kamba respondents, while Matiang’i, Ruto and Gachagua recorded strong support within their respective ethnic constituencies.

Separate TIFA findings further revealed growing support for a united opposition ticket. Among opposition supporters, a Kalonzo-Sifuna presidential pairing emerged as the most preferred option, attracting 28 per cent support.

A Gachagua-Kalonzo alliance followed closely with 25 per cent.

The poll also indicated significant support for a Kalonzo-Matiang’i combination, reinforcing calls for opposition leaders to rally behind a single candidate.

With the opposition yet to settle on its flagbearer, Kalonzo’s campaign launch is expected to intensify succession politics and strengthen his position in ongoing negotiations aimed at forming a formidable coalition to challenge Ruto’s re-election bid in 2027.
