Kalonzo faults IEBC CEO over early procurement of 2027 poll materials
Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has stated that IEBC CEO Hussein Marjan Hussein procured election materials for the 2027 polls even before the commission was fully constituted.
Speaking during an inter-party youth forum in Nairobi on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, Kalonzo expressed his disappointment with the commission, questioning how such a critical process could take place without proper oversight.

He urged the IEBC not to act in a partisan manner, stressing that the procurement of election materials before the new commission was in place was a clear sign of institutional failure. According to him, this premature procurement raises questions about the ability of the commission to deliver a credible election in 2027
“We are urging IEBC not to be partisan. I must tell you this: they have already procured materials even before the new Ruto commission came into place. The CEO of IEBC has already procured materials for the 2027 elections in the absence of the commission. This is how bad things can become; it’s true so they should have eaten before the commission came in. This is the tragedy of our country.” Kalonzo stated
Kalonzo further noted that the Gen Z revolution that began in 2024 should not be dismissed, insisting that its momentum will eventually be felt at the ballot.
His remarks come just days after a new commission was sworn into office, with Erastus Ethekon appointed as chairman. Ethekon takes over a position left vacant following the retirement of former chair Wafula Chebukati and the resignation of the “Cherera Four”, who went into exile after disputing the 2022 General Election results.
Newly constituted IEBC
The newly constituted commission has been working to meet constitutional timelines, which had already been delayed due to the long reconstitution process. Their immediate focus is on organising the upcoming by-elections scheduled for November in constituencies and wards that have remained without representation for months.

Kalonzo joins calls by other leaders warning the commission of the consequences of not delivering a credible election, with even the former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua issuing a caution that should the commission fail to deliver a credible election, 2027 will make 2007 look like a Christmas party
