Jubilee cancels delegates’ meeting in solidarity with protesting Kenyans
The Jubilee Party has called off its delegates’ meeting that was scheduled to take place in Kiambu County and was expected to be graced by party leader Uhuru Kenyatta.
Speaking to delegates who had already gathered at the venue on Monday, May 18, 2026, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i announced that the meeting would no longer proceed as planned, saying the party had made a last-minute decision to stand in solidarity with Kenyans protesting against the hike in fuel prices.

“We have decided as the Jubilee Party NEC, together with our party leader Uhuru Kenyatta, that we stand in solidarity with Kenyans, and in regards to this, we have decided to call off today’s programme and postpone this meeting by one week so that we have an opportunity to participate with kenyans in the call for fuel price reduction.”
Rescheduling the meeting
Matiang’i stated that the meeting had instead been postponed to next week at the same venue, depending on how the current standoff unfolds. He explained that the decision was reached by the party’s National Executive Committee after assessing the situation across the country, where Kenyans had taken to the streets to demonstrate over the fuel crisis.
“I have the authority of NEC. As the Jubilee Party, we stand in solidarity with Kenyans over the ongoing shutdown; we join hands with the rest pf Kenyans.”
Uhuru absconds meeting

According to Matiang’i, with Uhuru Kenyatta expected to preside over the event, the former president felt it would be inappropriate for the party to continue with political activities while citizens were out expressing their frustrations over the rising cost of fuel.
“Ile sababu alikataa kuja hapa ni kwamba alisema hawezi kuja kupanga mikakati ya chama, Wakenya wakiendelea kuandamana upande mwingine,” Matiang’i told the delegates.
Matiang’i, who is also being fronted by sections of the party as a possible flag bearer in the 2027 General Election, further criticised the current administration over its handling of national affairs. He warned that the country could face even more challenges if the situation is not addressed.
