Inside Ruto’s goodies to regain Mt Kenya turf amid heightened realignment
President William Ruto has returned to the heart of Mt Kenya at a time when political temperatures in the region are rising.
His three-day working tour of Nyeri County, the political backyard of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, is not just about development. It is also a carefully timed move to reconnect with a region where loyalty is increasingly being tested.
The visit comes nearly a year after Ruto last toured Nyeri in March 2025. Since then, the political landscape has shifted sharply, with leaders such as Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga publicly declaring support for the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) chief even as politicians start to align for the 2027 contest.

Gachagua, once Ruto’s closest ally, has fallen out with the president, was impeached, and has since pitched camp with the United Opposition. He is now working closely with leaders such as Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua, Eugene Wamalwa, and Fred Matiang’i, all eyeing to stop his reelection bid in the 2027 polls.
Against this backdrop, Ruto’s return to Nyeri sends a strong signal that he is not ready to cede Mt Kenya without a fight.
Game of numbers?
The president announced the tour on Sunday, January 11, 2026, during a church service at ACK St Paul’s Church in Kariki, Othaya. He said the main aim is to inspect ongoing and stalled development projects, engage local leaders, and listen to the concerns of residents.
At the top of the list are infrastructure projects, especially roads started during the Uhuru Kenyatta administration but later stalled due to a lack of funds.
These include the famous Mau Mau roads, many of which were completed only up to 20 per cent. Ruto assured residents that funding has now been secured and construction has resumed.

“People have been asking about the roads we launched before. The problem was money. Now we have it, and work is going on,” he said.
Housing is another major focus. Ruto is inspecting the Ksh21 billion affordable housing programme spread across Nyeri County. He is also overseeing the construction of more than 15 ultra-modern markets meant to boost small traders.
On Monday, January 12, 2026, he is expected to officially open the Karatina Modern Market, a key project for the local economy.
Agriculture, the backbone of Mt Kenya, features heavily in the president’s itinerary. Ruto has promised stronger support for dairy and coffee farming, two sectors that directly affect household incomes in the region. He said the government is actively seeking better international markets for Kenyan produce, citing recent trade talks with United States President Donald Trump.

2027 youth factor
Youth empowerment is also being rolled out as a key goodie during the visit. On Monday, Ruto is scheduled to launch the disbursement of more than Ksh500 million under the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) programme.
At least 10,000 young people from Nyeri, Murang’a, Nyandarua and Kirinyaga counties are set to benefit, each receiving about Ksh50,000 as start-up capital for small businesses.
Politically, the visit is loaded with meaning. Nyeri is Gachagua’s home ground, and his fallout with Ruto has left deep divisions in Mt Kenya politics.

By stepping into this space with development promises and cash-backed programmes, Ruto appears keen to remind residents that his bond with the region goes beyond individual leaders.
However, the president dismissed claims that politics and propaganda would weaken his relationship with Mt Kenya. He said his friendship with the region is built on a clear transformation agenda agreed upon during the 2022 campaigns.
He pointed to reforms in education, agriculture, MSME support, infrastructure and power connectivity as proof of delivery.
“I know there will be an examination in 2027. Everyone will be judged by their work,” Ruto said, adding that he is ready to face opponents who thrive on insults and drama.
It is now a game of wait and see if his charm offensive will reinstate his political vet in a region that Gachagua has rallied to vote Ruto out in the 2027 General Elections. Already, he has declared himself a sole opposition leader capable of unseating the president, though the stakes are high for Jubilee Deputy Party Leader Fred Matiang’i and Wiper boss Kalonzo Musyoka to run for the country’s top seat.
The opposition has not yet fronted any, as they play a waiting game in what they say is avoiding Ruto’s disruption.
