Inside Bomet senatorial politics ahead of 2027 as Chepkirui Kones enters the race
Bomet’s senatorial contest ahead of the 2027 General Election is shaping into a high-stakes political battle following the entry of Chepkirui Kones.
Kones, daughter of the late Kipkalya Kones, a towering figure in the region’s political landscape, signalled her intent to carry forward her father’s legacy while carving out her own path in the county’s leadership.
Speaking during a presser on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at Bomet town after transferring her vote to Bomet, Kones declared her interest in joining the already competitive race.

Her declaration has pushed for a fresh energy into the race, with the voters noting a growing wave of grassroots support building around her candidacy.
Kones’ commitment
In her announcement, Kones stressed her commitment to transformative leadership, pledging to champion inclusive development, youth empowerment, and accountability in governance.
She is a wife to Belgut MP. Nelson Koech and the two reside in Kericho county.

“Today I came here to transfer my vote to this county and I have already confirmed that I’m allowed to cast my vote here. Therefore, I’m fully allowed to vie for the senatorial seat in this county and I want to declare that I will be on the race,” Kones said.
She pointed to her deep-rooted connection to Bomet despite her marital ties to neighbouring Kericho County.
“Everyone knows me in this county and I am ready to offer servant leadership and ensure the voice of Bomet residents is heard at the national level,” she said.
Open for competitive race
Her entry sets the stage for a competitive contest that already features incumbent senator Hillary Sigei, who is expected to defend his seat, and outgoing two-term governor Hillary Barchok, who has also declared interest in the position.
Former Bomet governor Isaac Rutto had also declared his support for governor Barchok for him to run for the seat, and they have been influential figures in the region for the top seats.

The race is further complicated by the presence of other influential local leaders, including Moloo Sobon.
Kones’ lineage, combined with her emerging popularity, could significantly reshape the dynamics of the contest, particularly among previous voters for her father’s leadership and those seeking generational change.
