Ichung’wah demands police vigilance ahead of Gachagua’s rally in Kikuyu

By , April 10, 2026

National Assembly Majority Leader and Kikuyu Constituency MP Kimani Ichung’wah has written to Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja urging heightened security in Kikuyu Town ahead of a planned rally by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua scheduled for Saturday, April 11, 2026.

In a letter dated April 10, 2026, Ichung’wah called on the National Police Service to ensure adequate protection for residents, businesses and public facilities, warning of tensions surrounding the planned political gathering in the constituency.

“The last two weeks have seen Rigathi Gachagua embark on a deliberate campaign of incitement, hate and violence targeting the people of Kikuyu Constituency, intending to create disharmony amongst my constituents,” he called out the former DP.

Security concerns ahead of rally

In the correspondence addressed to the Inspector General, Ichung’wah said the past two weeks had seen rising tensions in the Kikuyu constituency linked to political mobilisation.

He stated that the planned rally had triggered concerns about possible unrest and called for early security planning to maintain order.

Ichung’wah said Kikuyu residents had resisted attempts to divide the community and emphasised that the constituency remains open to leaders from across the political divide.

He added that his role as the elected representative obligates him to ensure the safety of residents and the protection of property.

Past incidents cited in security request

Ichung’wah referenced earlier incidents of violence in Kikuyu that he said had caused destruction of public property and private homes.

He cited the burning of Kikuyu NG-CDF offices on June 25, 2024, and further incidents on June 25, 2025, when the Kikuyu Law Courts and County Government offices were torched.

He also mentioned attacks on his private residence and his parents’ home during the same period.

He said these incidents had resulted in arrests and investigations, noting that the events remain matters of public record. The majority leader told the inspector general that intelligence reports had indicated mobilisation of groups from several counties, including Kiambu, Nairobi, Murang’a, Kirinyaga and Nyandarua, ahead of the planned rally.

Ichung’wah said information received pointed to the coordination of transport for individuals travelling to Kikuyu Town and called on the police to closely monitor the situation.

Call for adequate police deployment

The Kikuyu MP further raised concerns about possible targeting of businesses belonging to his family in Kikuyu Town and asked the National Police Service to take necessary preventive measures.

Ichung’wah also referred to remarks made during recent public gatherings and quoted statements he said heightened tensions surrounding the event.

Kesho Ichung’wah aambiwe hakuna mtu ako na mtoto kwa mgongo, na hata yule ako na yeye atawachia nyanyake,” he said, citing comments made during a funeral in Laikipia.

He cautioned the inspector general against withdrawing police presence in Kikuyu, saying the town requires adequate security to protect residents and property during the planned political event.

Ichung’wah noted that the Kikuyu Constituency has previously hosted leaders from different political formations without incidents. He cited a rally held on March 12, 2026, where former Chief Justice David Maraga addressed supporters at the Kikuyu Bus Park without disruption.

He urged police to maintain sufficient deployment to ensure public safety during the planned rally and to safeguard residents, businesses and public institutions in the town.

This comes days after he reprimanded the former second in command for attacking him during a requiem mass in Ol Kalou in the presence of President William Ruto. Ichung’wah accused Gachagua of disrespecting the deceased family by advancing political rhetoric.
