Homa Bay honours Raila as county backs Oburu to carry Baba’s legacy
Homa Bay County came to a standstill as thousands of residents gathered to celebrate the life and legacy of the late ODM Party Leader Raila Odinga.
The event, held at the stadium named in his honour, Raila Odinga Stadium, on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, brought together leaders, clergy, and ordinary citizens who described the day as a moment of unity, reflection, and renewed commitment to the ideals that Raila stood for.

Homa Bay County Governor Gladys Wanga led the memorial, describing it as a historic day for Homa Bay and for Kenya’s democracy.
“In a powerful tribute at the stadium that bears his name, we held the first Ecumenical Memorial Service for Baba Raila Odinga in Homa Bay,” she stated.
The service, attended by political leaders and supporters from across the region, reflected on Raila’s lifelong fight for justice, devolution, and inclusion in governance. “We commemorated the legacy of a leader who shaped our nation’s democracy and devolution,” Wanga added.

The county used the opportunity to express its commitment to preserving Raila’s vision and values. Wanga said the gathering was also in line with the ODM Party’s decision to allow members to mourn and celebrate their leader in their own communities.
“True to the ODM Party’s resolution, this service provided a space for Baba’s supporters to gather and honour the man they so loved,” she said.
The emotional ceremony also marked a symbolic transition of leadership within the ODM Party, with Homa Bay County pledging its support for Raila’s elder brother, Senator Oburu Oginga. Wanga noted that the county stands firmly behind him as the one to carry forward Raila’s legacy.
“It was here that Homa Bay County pledged its support for Senator Oburu Oginga as the new Party Leader,” she said.

As the sun set over the stadium, chants of “Baba lives on!” echoed across the stands, a reflection of the unshaken love and loyalty Raila inspired throughout his political journey. In Wanga’s words, “Baba’s spirit lives on!” a message that captured the hope and faith of a region determined to keep his dream for a just and united Kenya alive.
