Governor Natembeya cries foul after security withdrawal, says his life is at risk

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has called out the National Police Service, saying they are putting his life in danger after his security detail was withdrawn abruptly and without explanation. Natembeya said the move has left him exposed at a time when his public duties require constant engagement with residents, often in unpredictable and high-risk environments.

Speaking through an X post posted on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, Natembeya revealed that the officers assigned to protect him were recalled without any prior communication.

“Today, my security detail was withdrawn without any notice or lawful justification,” he said, describing the decision as not only unexpected but also unlawful, noting that State officers are legally entitled to official protection. According to him, the action violates the National Police Service Act.

“Sections 30 and 31, which obligate the Inspector-General to provide security to State officers whose roles and public engagements expose them to heightened risk,” he wrote

Natembeya, a former Regional Commissioner who has spent years working in volatile environments, said the sudden action raises serious concerns, both for his personal safety and for the ability of his county government to function smoothly. He explained that there was no official communication to justify the move.

“There is no court order, no disciplinary communication, and no official explanation for this decision,” Ntembeya stated

The governor added that the withdrawal disrupts essential county operations, including public functions, field visits, and engagements that require movement across the county.

“Lack of security not only endangers my safety but also interferes with the smooth execution of county duties,” he stated

Natembeya appealed to the National Police Service to reconsider its decision urgently. He called for the reinstatement of his security team and urged the police leadership to follow the law in handling matters involving public officers.

“I call upon the National Police Service to immediately reinstate my security and adhere to the constitutional standards of fairness, professionalism, and respect for the law,” he stated

Murkomen explains why Natembeya’s security was withdrawn

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, on Thursday, November 26, 2025, shed light on the withdrawal of the security detail of several politicians ahead of the by-election set to be conducted across the nation this week.

Speaking in Kasipul, Homa Bay Constituency, Murkomen confirmed that Trans Nzoia governor George Natembeya was among the affected leaders. Murkomen said the measure was adopted after police disclosed that some of the officers were involved in criminal activities.

“Other than Natembeya, other politicians too have had their security withdrawn. NPS has reports that officers attached to them are involved in criminal activities. Some have chosen to keep quiet and not to share. Others have decided to go public,” Murkomen said.
