Gachagua urges Northern Kenya residents to demand audit of NG-CDF, equalisation funds
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has called on residents of Northern Kenya to take proactive steps in ensuring accountability for public funds allocated to their counties over the years.
He emphasised the need for transparency in the use of the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) and equalisation funds.
Speaking to local radio stations on Thursday, January 22, 2026, at his Karen residence, Gachagua urged Northern Kenyans to approach the courts to enforce a special audit of public funds.

“People of Northern Kenya must file a petition before the high court to compel the auditor general to carry out a special audit on all funds that have been given to the country since 2013, that have been give to CDF since its inception and equalisation funds since the new constitution, also in the same petition to compel inspector general of police to provide security to the auditors to carry out that audit and from there the people of Northern Kenya will make inform decisions on their next leaders,” he said.
He highlighted the importance of securing protection for auditors to ensure the review is conducted fairly and thoroughly.

“The petition should also compel the inspector general of police to provide security to the auditors to carry out that audit,” he added.
Gachagua further said the findings of such an audit would allow citizens to make informed decisions about their future leaders and the management of county resources.
“From the results of the audit, the people of Northern Kenya will be able to make informed decisions on their next leaders,” he stated.

The Deputy President’s remarks come as calls grow from civil society for stricter oversight and transparency measures in counties receiving significant government funding.
He stressed that citizen participation in monitoring devolved funds is key to preventing mismanagement and ensuring that resources reach the intended beneficiaries.
