Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has called on ODM members to unite and work closely with the United Opposition, insisting that loyalty and cooperation remain key in Nairobi.

He made the remarks during a church service at Kasarani on Sunday, December 7, 2025.

Gachagua stated that the United Opposition is clear in its strategy and will present one candidate to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 elections. He warned that efforts by Ruto’s team tolure Kalonzo Musyoka to their side would fail.

“They have been trailing him everywhere, inviting him to join them. I want to confirm that my cousin here cannot betray the people of Kenya,” he said.

He urged ODM to sit closer to the United Opposition.

“Hii Nairobi, Wiper iko na umarufu kubwa sana. For a long time wamesaidia ODM. So, tumesema, there is no way we are going to have friendly fight. There is no way Wiper will fight DCP or DAP K. Where Wiper is strong, DCP will support Wiper. Where, where DCP is strong, we will request Wiper to support DCP,” Gachagua said.

“And in the process, tufagie viti yote Nairobi. Na hatutaki kutenga ODM. Tunasema ODM please. Nyinyi, mumesaidiwa na Kalonzo siku mingi. Sasa mkitoka kwa Kalonzo, muende kwa Ruto, si mutapotea?”

“Tunasema mkuje tuketi karibu. Hata kama hamtaki kuketi na mimi, si mketi na Kalonzo mmekua na yeye mwaka kumi na tano. Ndiyo. We want, we want, we want the peace of Kenya, in Nairobi.”

Gachagua’s remarks followed criticism over his political agreement with Wiper Party, which some politicians said unfairly favoured DCP in Nairobi. On Sunday, November 30, 2025, during a thanksgiving event in Kariobangi North, he outlined the Nairobi deal between DCP and Wiper.

“Mimi niseme watu ya Kariobangi asanteni sana. DCP is the party for Nairobi. Na hii ndio chanzo ya siasa yetu hapa Nairobi. Na sisi tumepangana vizuri na kiongozi wa Wiper, ambaye ndiye amekuwa akisaidia ODM hapa Nairobi,” Gachagua said in Kariobangi.

Under the deal, DCP will take the governor, senator, and women representative positions in Nairobi. Gachagua said that out of 17 seats agreed upon between the two parties, DCP will take 16, while the remaining seat will be negotiated. He said the agreement shows DCP’s clear plan to grow its influence in Nairobi and strengthen its position nationally.

Gachagua slams asset sales

During the Kasarani service, Gachagua also criticised President Ruto over the sale of key national assets, including Safaricom. He argued that the government had undervalued one of Kenya’s most profitable institutions and failed to involve the public as required by law.

“The country is being sold every day. Safaricom has been one of the greatest revenue generators for our country, about Ksh18 billion to Ksh20 billion every year. Now one share sold for Ksh34, whereas the real value is Ksh70 to Ksh80, so the country is losing around Ksh250 billion,” he said.

Gachagua used a metaphor to illustrate the economic impact:

“It is like having a high-yielding cow at home. This cow provides milk for your children, but you sell it and have nothing to feed them. You eat the food, but you have no cow left to milk.”

He said the government has already sold or lined up for disposal several state corporations, including Kenya Pipeline, Kenya Ports, and airports, framing the moment as a national crisis.

“We are in a place in our country where Ruto is selling everything that is working. Kenya Pipeline ameuza, Kenya Port ameuza, airport ameuza and now Safaricom ameuza,” he said.
