Gachagua seeks legal insight amid speculation over political future

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua hosted a delegation from the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) at his Wamunyoro residence on Saturday morning February 8, 2025, signalling continued political engagement despite his turbulent tenure and recent speculation about his political future.
Gachagua, who has been at the centre of the country’s shifting political landscape, described the meeting as a candid discussion on the nation’s governance, constitutional law, and human rights.
The delegation was led by Wakili Steve Mbugua and comprised legal minds with expertise across various domains of Kenyan law.
“This morning, at our Wamunyoro residence, I had the privilege of having a candid discussion about the current state of our nation’s politics with a delegation of lawyers from the Law Society of Kenya led by Wakili Steve Mbugua,” Gachagua wrote on his X account.

“It was a thought-provoking conversation that shed light on their perspectives and offered valuable insights into the complexities of our nation’s governance. They brought with them a broad range of perspectives, from constitutional law to human rights and how collectively we can uphold and promote the fundamental rights and freedom of all people,” he added.
The former deputy president’s meeting with the legal fraternity comes at a time of increasing political tensions, with speculation over his standing in the political space.
For Gachagua, this engagement with legal professionals could serve multiple purposes—whether as a shield against potential legal challenges, a means of bolstering his credibility, or even as an early move toward a redefined political strategy.

He expressed confidence that the expertise and collective experience of the legal team will make a unique and valuable contribution to their plans moving forward.
“It is very clear from the outset that their expertise and collective experience will bring a unique and valuable contribution to our plans as we head forward. The consultations continue,” Gachagua concluded in his statement.
Gachagua’s political manoeuvring
Gachagua has been actively engaging with various leaders from Mt Kenya, hosting Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of County Assembly (MCAs) at his Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri County.
Beyond the region, he has also welcomed political leaders from other parts of the country, further fueling speculation about his intentions to forge alliances ahead of the next election cycle.
Despite his impeachment as Deputy President, a move that remains under judicial review, Gachagua’s political influence persists.
The Kenyan Constitution prohibits impeached persons from vying for elective office, leaving Gachagua’s potential candidacy in 2027 uncertain.
However, analysts suggest that Gachagua’s ability to rally Mount Kenya voters could still make him a pivotal player in shaping the country’s political landscape.
