Democracy for the Citizens’ Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has launched a scathing attack on his former boss, President William Ruto.

Speaking when he and other opposition bigwigs attended a church service in Kajiado on Sunday, September 28, 2025, the former second in command accused Ruto of double-speak during his address at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

Gachagua began by mocking the president for addressing empty seats after most delegates allegedly walked out shortly after his invitation.

Huyu mtu ameenda pale United Nations General Assembly, kuitwa tu, watu wote wameamka wakaenda, akabaki na watu kama kumi. Kwa sababu amejulikana dunia mzima ni mtu wa ninii,” he said.

The DCP boss accused Ruto of hypocrisy, claiming that he condemned abductions in Haiti while presiding over the same practice back home.

“He is preaching water while drinking wine. Anasimama pale kupinga abduction in Haiti, when in Kenya, he is the chief abductor,” Gachagua declared.

Kalonzo joins in the criticism

Joining in the criticism, Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka accused the president of misleading the international community on democracy and human rights.

“Ebu angalieni double speak. Yani huyu mtu ni wa maajabu hadi anajua kudanganya hadi wazungu,” Kalonzo said as the congregation cheered.

The opposition leader further linked Ruto’s government to questionable dealings in Sudan, warning that Kenya risked being branded as a transit hub for smuggled resources.

Anaenda anawaambia kule Sudan, tunataka human rights zieshimike kule Sudan. We are actually saying, this Monday, let our children be brought from Haiti. Tunajua ya kwamba dhahabu inayotolewa Darfur inapitia hapa kwa uwanja yetu wa ndege JKIA kupelekwa Uarabuni, ndio origin ionekane kama ni ya Kenya,” Kalonzo added.

The remarks come just days after Ruto delivered his maiden UNGA speech, where he urged world leaders to respect human rights, support Haiti’s stability, and push for peace in Sudan.

His address, however, continues to attract sharp domestic criticism, with opposition figures accusing him of failing to practise at home what he preaches abroad.

The church service in Kajiado turned into a political rally as leaders vowed to keep exposing what they termed Ruto’s double standards on governance and accountability.
