Gachagua revisits one term rhetoric targeted at Ruto

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has revisited his verbal attacks against President William Ruto.
In his latest attacks, Gachagua has vowed that he is ready to make Ruto a one-term president, a first in Kenya’s history.
In a statement on Sunday, April 13, 2025, Gachagua said his bid to dislodge Ruto from office in 2027 is an effort to redeem the nation from kakistocracy.
“One Term! Round One! One Way! Thank you, Ngong Town patriots, for your warm welcome! With great determination and courage, we shall redeem our Nation from kakistocracy!” Gachagua stated.
‘Ruto must go’ chants
His remarks come amid rising anger directed at Ruto’s administration, with the “Ruto must go” slogan becoming a symbol of resistance across the country.
Speaking during the burial of George Odour, the former bodyguard of ODM leader Raila Odinga, in Siaya County, Ruto brushed off the sentiments, saying such slogans have existed in the past and do not worry him.
“Kulikuwa na Moi must go, kulikuwa na mwingine must go na mwingine tena must go… hii tu ni wimbo ya kawaida, there is no problem,” Ruto said.
“Mara wananiita Zakayo, mara Kasongo, mara nini. I am not bothered. I am focused: we must get our education right; we must get our electrification right; we must get our infrastructure right; and we must handle devolution properly so that we can all move the country forward. And I welcome any assistance so that we can make Kenya great; that is my mission and commitment.”
In recent weeks, Ruto and Gachagua have been at loggerheads following their fallout which led to the latter’s impeachment in October 2024.
