Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) Leader Rigathi Gachagua has hit out at President William Ruto for claiming that he lacked a formidable challenge to his bid for reelection following the death of Orange Democratic Movement Leader Raila Odinga.

Speaking during the United Opposition presser at the Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka Command Centre in Nairobi on Monday, November 3, 2025, Gachagua reminded Ruto that he had an opponent not in the current opposition politicians but in the millions of Kenyans dissatisfied with his rule.

He challenged the president to prepare to face the people of Kenya at the ballot in 2027.

“I have heard Ruto bragging that after the demise of Raila, he now has no opponent. I want to inform him we are not his opponent; his opponents are the people of Kenya,” he responded.

“So, to William Ruto, as much as you seem to celebrate the death of Raila and claim you have opponents. Your opponent is not ourselves here; they are the people of Kenya; they are in millions; be prepared to face them when the elections come,” he stated.

Gachagua’s statement comes after he also revealed that the opposition had made tremendous progress in settling on a single candidate to face Ruto.

People-centred call

Gachagua affirmed that getting Ruto out of office is a people-centered move the opposition had to heed.

“We have clear instructions from the people of Kenya to agree on one candidate to face Ruto and end his rule. We want to assure the people that we are determined to abide by their wish and get a single candidate. It will happen, and that will be the president of the nation,” he stated.

On his part, Kalonzo Musyoka expressed optimism about the prospect of the opposition dethroning the Ruto-led regime.

The former VP referenced the unity witnessed in the United opposition camp as an ominous sign for the incumbent regime.

“The United Opposition is the next government in waiting, and we want to tell the current regime that their time is up,” he stated.

“We are sending a message to the country that we are truly united and willing to consult in every situation. After our consultation, Ruto will definitely be a one-term president,” he stated.
