Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has revealed tremendous progress in the United Opposition’s quest to settle on a single candidate to face President William Ruto.

Speaking during a joint presser on Monday, November 3, 2025, Gachagua stated that the call is born and informed by the citizens who have increasingly demanded a change from the corruption, abductions, and onslaughts on people’s pay slips witnessed in the government.

He described the situation as one where opposition parties made agreements to support a single candidate from their coalition, aiming to present a united front against the Kenya Kwanza-allied government candidates in the upcoming by-elections, which is part of the effort to identify the right person to challenge Ruto in the 2027 elections.

According to Gachagua, the DCP party had agreed to cede ground in the Malava and Mbeere North parliamentary seats, with Kalonzo’s Wiper also opting out of a contest in the Narok Town ward in favour of a DCP candidate, Masikonde.

“The formula to get a single candidate to face Ruto is on course. For those in doubt, the ongoing by-elections are a dress rehearsal of the formula and mechanism that will get him out of office,” he declared.

People-centred call

Gachagua affirmed that getting Ruto out of office is a people-centered move the opposition had to heed.

“We have clear instructions from the people of Kenya to agree on one candidate to face Ruto and end his rule. We want to assure the people that we are determined to abide by their wish and get a single candidate. It will happen, and that will be the president of the nation,” he stated.

Speaking at the same event, Kalonzo declared that the united opposition was the next government in waiting.

The former VP, in line with Gachagua’s remarks, referenced the unity witnessed across the opposition outfit, stating that it was only a matter of time before they take over leadership of Kenya.

“The United Opposition is the next government in waiting, and we want to tell the current regime that their time is up,” he stated.

“We are sending a message to the country that we are truly united and willing to consult at every situation. After our consultation, Ruto will definitely be a one-term president,” he stated.
