Gachagua renews commitment as opposition moves to identify presidential candidate
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has indicated that he is willing to support another candidate in the opposition coalition’s quest for power should the agreed selection formula not favour his presidential bid ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during a press conference on June 9, 2026, the former deputy president said he remains committed to the broader objective of unseating President William Ruto and would respect any consensus reached by coalition partners regarding the choice of a flag bearer.
“If any of my other colleagues agree upon it, I give a full commitment to the people of Kenya that I, Rigathi Gachagua and over 10 million supporters behind me, shall support the agreed candidate,” Gachagua said.
Leading the opposition
Gachagua has further declared that he would not only support the chosen flag bearer but also take a leading role in the campaign to remove President William Ruto from office.

He said he would spearhead a nationwide campaign effort unlike any seen before, aimed at rallying Kenyans behind the opposition’s agenda ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Gachagua has assured Kenyans that the jaunt to seek a united opposition presidential flag bearer has just begun. He has indicated that he will take the front line.
“I will do whatever it takes to mobilise my colleagues to make it possible to have a single presidential candidate,” Gachagua said.
Gachagua also pledged to work tirelessly to preserve unity within the opposition, saying he would do everything in his power to prevent divisions that could undermine the coalition’s chances in the 2027 General Election.
Wamalwa take on Gachagua’s leadership
This comes even as the Democratic Action Party (DAP-Kenya) party leader Eugene Wamalwa stated that the High Court’s decision to uphold former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s impeachment has, instead of weakening him, made him politically stronger than he was before.

The outspoken former Defence Cabinet secretary, while appearing in an interview with a local radio station on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, dismissed the notion that the ruling had sealed Gachagua’s political future or condemned him to political irrelevance.
According to Wamalwa, the judgment has instead awakened the former Deputy President and positioned him as a key player in the run-up to the 2027 General Election.
“And those saying that Gachagua has been finished, he has now become stronger politically.”
