The former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has dismissed ongoing speculations about the United Opposition’s 2027 lineup.

While speaking during the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) Youth League forum held at the party headquarters on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, he said the rumours were being spread by the National Intelligence Service (NIS) and individuals aligned with the government, urging Kenyans to ignore them.

He went on to tell Kenyans that, as the United Opposition, they are in no hurry to name their lineup. He stated that it will not be until December 2026, after Christmas, that they will announce the lineup that will face President William Ruto on the ballot in 2027.

“It was being run by the NIS. I would like Kenyans to ignore that nonsense. We have not sat down to agree on who will be the flagbearer, and we are not in a hurry to sit down and agree on a proposed lineup. We will do so in December 2026 after Christmas,” Gachagua stated.

According to Gachagua, the United Opposition principals have all resorted to popularising their bids in their respective regions so that when they meet at the table, positions are awarded according to the political strength each has from their backyard.

He said the reason for delaying the formation of a formidable team is to prevent the frontrunner from being harassed by the government in an attempt to weaken the United Opposition.

He went on to express his disappointment with some allied members of the United Opposition who, after the rumours emerged, jumped in and believed the misinformation being spread by daily newspapers.

“I have seen a few characters, even within the United Opposition, wameanza kuangukia hiyo propaganda ya Kasongo. They believe the propaganda that we have sat down and distributed positions among ourselves,” he said.

He added that they have a single most important duty before them, which is to mobilise Kenyans to register as voters and continue the campaign aimed at ensuring President William Ruto’s administration remains a one-term government that does not go past 2027.

Proposed lineup

A proposed United Opposition lineup had fronted Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka as the coalition’s flagbearer, with his deputy being Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya.

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary and Jubilee Party flagbearer Fred Matiang’i was allocated the Prime Minister position, while Democratic Action Party (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa was proposed as the National Assembly Speaker, with the PLP Party leader taking the Senate Speaker position.

The former Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, was not allocated any specific position but was promised a 50 per cent share of the government.
