From Raila to MCA: Kanini Kega recalls losing all his 2022 votes
Former Kieni Member of Parliament (MP) Kanini Kega has come out to recount how he got it all wrong in the 2022 general election, with everyone he voted for losing to Kenya Kwanza.
In a statement posted on his Facebook account on Saturday, August 9, 2025, the EALA legislator, who was also on the ballot after serving for three terms as Kieni MP, revealed how he ended up casting votes that all went to unsuccessful candidates.
Kega recalled that exactly three years ago, he woke up to vote for his presidential candidate, Raila Odinga, himself, and four other elective positions. He disclosed that this was the first time he had ever voted for and supported Raila since he began voting, yet the outcome was a complete miss for him.
For the first time in his voting history, all his choices lost – 0 out of 6 – nil, zero, or not. As a result, he says, he was left wondering how many other Kenyans shared the same fate.

“Exactly 3 years ago I woke up to go and vote for my presidential candidate, the Rt Hon. Raila Odinga, myself too, and 4 other elective positions. For the first time since I started voting, I got ALL WRONG: 0 out of 6! Nil Zero Noti! Ni wangapi tulianguka pamoja?” Kanini said.
UDA wave casualties
In the run-up to the 2022 general election, the MP was a vocal critic of Kenya Kwanza and a staunch supporter of Azimio, using all his influence and every available platform to throw cold water on William Ruto’s bid.

He was determined to ensure that the current president could not “climb the mountain”, a point of contention between Azimio and Kenya Kwanza.
Ruto, however, seemed to have the upper hand, as evidenced by the over four million votes he garnered from the vote-rich mountain region, compared to Raila, who managed only about one million votes – a historic outcome, given that Raila had never previously secured such a significant share from the region.
The same fate befell other leaders from the mountain who opposed Ruto and were proponents of the then regime.
Former Ndaragwa MP Jeremiah Kioni, for instance, met a similar fate as they were swept away by the UDA wave. Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu also faced similar consequences.
