Do not prosecute case outside court, Church urges Raila
The Kenyan Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) has asked Azimio-One Kenya presidential candidate Raila Odinga to stop prosecuting his election petition case out of the Supreme Court.
The bishops who spoke shortly after Raila launched a scathing attack at the polls chief Wafula Chebukati at a function, also asked outgoing president Uhuru Kenyatta to invite Raila and President-Elect William Ruto for a cup of tea to quell what they said was a growing unease in the country.
Speaking in Mombasa and Kakamega counties the bishops told Uhuru that he has the capacity to leave the country united as he is yet to hand over power to his successor.
In Kilifi County, the bishops led by KCCB chairman Archbishop Martin Kivuva, said Uhuru, Ruto and Raila should sit as elders and discuss the future of the country.
“We pray that president Kenyatta and his friends Raila Odinga and William Ruto embrace one another in a cup of tea together, and talk about the situation, I know it’s challenging but I know you have a capacity to embrace greatness for this country,” said Kivuva.
Speaking at the Kilifi Catholic Parish, Kivuva said although it may prove difficult, such a heroic act will instil confidence to Kenyans that elections do not cause enemity.
Uhuru is yet to congratulate his deputy president after he was declared president elect by the IEBC chair.
“Because the President has not handed over power to anyone, he has a right to go round telling Kenyans to remain united,” said Kivuva.
Expressed confidence
Kivuva also asked Kenyans to remain calm as the Supreme Court deals with the presidential petition availed by the Azimio Coalition, expressing confidence that the court will deliver justice to all.
At the same time Kivuva expressed his regrets by the continued divisions that have been exhibited by the IEBC Commissioners’ saying it’s not good for a democracy of a country.
“Try to work together to conclude this election because Kenyans have demonstrated they are peaceful, if you have reasons to complain, follow the right channel because we don’t want you to be the reason why Kenya should be divided,” said Kivuva.
In Kakamega County, the bishops urged the political class to be instruments of peace by allowing the Supreme Court to arbitrate and deliver a judgment full of truth, justice and which bring peace.
KCCB also urged voters in the counties of Kakamega and Mombasa who are expected to vote for their governors not lose hope in the electoral system but rise up to vote for their governor today.
Bishop Joseph Obanyii (pictured) read the conference pastoral letter when he celebrated mass and conferred the sacrament of confirmation to new Catholics at the Holy Cross Murhanda Catholic Church in Shinyalu constituency, Kakamega County yesterday.
