Didmus Barasa signals bold move for Bungoma governor seat
By Kiprono Keileb, August 7, 2025Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa has officially declared his interest in the Bungoma gubernatorial race, signalling what could be a significant political shift ahead of the 2027 elections.
Barasa, speaking during a meet-the-people tour in Samoya, Wanduyi, and Nangili in Webuye West constituency on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, sought blessings and endorsement from residents to succeed Governor Ken Lusaka. Barasa, known for his calculated political moves, told the crowds that the time had come for Bungoma to move to the next level of leadership.
“Nimekuja kuomba ruhusa yenu, nimeskia hapa Bungoma unaomba ruhusa ndio uombe kuwa governor. Nimekuja muniwekelee mkono, mniwekelee mkono vizuri, Nimekuja kuwaomba ruhusa kwa sababu kinyozi hajinyoi.” Barasa said while addressing supporters.
His remarks, delivered with a lot of energy, drew cheers from supporters,
“Hii kiti ya governor ya Bungoma, wakati Ken Lusaka anaenda nyumba, niendelee mbele, biongeze gear na niongeze bidii.”Barasa added

The MP’s move is seen as a challenge to the current political hierarchy in Bungoma, as he positions himself as the successor to Lusaka, whose term ends in 2027. Barasa has increasingly aligned his politics with grassroots mobilisation, a strategy he believes will propel him to the top county seat.
Beyond public rallies, Barasa is also building strategic political networks behind the scenes. He held a consultative meeting with Kabuchai MP Majimbo Kalasinga, where the two discussed governance, strategy, and what he described as “the well-being of our people.”
“This evening I had a great catch-up session with Hon. Majimbo Kalasinga, MP, Kabuchai Constituency. Always refreshing to exchange thoughts and ideas with fellow leaders committed to the progress and well-being of our people,” Barasa shared in a social media post following their meeting.
While Barasa has not officially launched his gubernatorial campaign, his recent activities suggest that he is already building momentum and laying the groundwork for a countywide campaign.
Barasa’s early announcement could be a tactical play to test the waters, gauge public mood, and begin consolidating support ahead of what is expected to be a highly competitive race in Bungoma.
If successful, his transition from MP to governor would represent a new phase in his political career.
