DCP leaders don party colours during swearing-in of party’s first MP, Sammy Ngotho
By Mabonga Makhanu, July 28, 2026Members of Parliament and senators allied to the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) turned up in party colours on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, as the party’s first Member of Parliament-elect, Sammy Douglas Kamau Ngotho, was headed to take the oath of office at the National Assembly.
Videos shared by Kipipiri MP Wanjiku Muhia ahead of the swearing-in ceremony showed the leaders dressed in the party’s signature green colours.
Male leaders wore green blazers paired with grey trousers, while their female counterparts donned green blazers and skirts, with some, including Naivasha MP Jayne Kihara, opting for green trousers.
The leaders later posed for a group photograph outside Parliament Buildings, displaying their coordinated attire before chanting their anti-incumbency and opposition slogans.
Ngotho’s swearing-in came after a dramatic start to the day, with the MP-elect opting to board a public matatu from Ol Kalou to Nairobi for the ceremony at Parliament. Throughout the journey, he appeared jovial as supporters and residents congratulated him on his victory.
DCP members
The DCP delegation was led by the party’s secretary general-designate and Nyandarua senator John Methu, who spearheaded the party’s successful Ol Kalou by-election campaign.
Other leaders present included Kipipiri MP Wanjiku Muhia, Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa, Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu, Laikipia Senator John Kinyua, Starehe MP Amos Mwago, Tetu MP Geoffrey Wandeto and several other party officials and elected leaders.
The party has remained in a celebratory mood since its landslide victory in the Ol Kalou by-election, where Ngotho secured more than 85 per cent of the votes cast to become the constituency’s new MP.
DCP senators
In the previous week, DCP senators also attracted national attention after attending Senate sittings dressed in similar green party attire to celebrate the victory.
Their appearance drew reactions from fellow legislators, with Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot poking fun at the group and likening them to “grasshoppers” because of their green outfits.
DCP’s popularity
The celebrations come at a time when DCP, led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, is increasingly being viewed as one of Kenya’s fastest-growing political parties.
According to a recent TIFA opinion poll, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leads in party popularity with 24 per cent support, followed by the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) at 19 per cent, while DCP ranks third with 13 per cent.
Ngotho becomes DCP’s first member of parliament, alongside three members of county assembly who were also elected on the party’s ticket during the recent by-elections, marking a significant milestone for the relatively new political outfit.
