Nandi County Senator Samson Cherargei has waded into the heated debate over threats by Nairobi Members of County Assembly (MCAs) to impeach Governor Johnson Sakaja, dismissing the move as a serious political blunder that undermines the credibility of the county assembly.

In a statement posted on his X account on Wednesday, August 3, 2025, Cherargei said the MCAs’ threats lacked noble intentions and would only serve to erode public confidence in the operations of the Nairobi County Assembly.

“To Nairobi MCAs, that was a serious fluke and political blunder that shall cost the integrity of the operations of Nairobi City County Assembly,” Cherargei wrote.

He explained that while impeachment is provided for in law, it is fundamentally a political process rather than a legal or criminal procedure.

“In any case, impeachment proceedings are normally a political process that’s neither civil nor criminal,” Cherargei noted, suggesting that the threats to the governor were not rooted in accountability but in political mischief.

The Senator went further, accusing the MCAs of playing politics with governance instead of focusing on service delivery to Nairobi residents.

“The MCAs’ threats to Governor Sakaja were hot and didn’t have a noble intention of accountability on the resources of Nairobi City County,” he said.

Cherargei, who is a close ally of President William Ruto, also warned the MCAs that their threats would not materialise unless they went the full way of impeachment within the stipulated legal timelines

“To Nairobi City County MCAs, 60 days shall lapse; you shall do nothing about it unless you impeach the governor!” he added.

The Senator’s remarks come after weeks of speculation and tension within the Nairobi County Assembly, where some MCAs have accused Governor Sakaja of mismanaging county resources and failing to deliver on key promises. Calls for his impeachment have been growing louder, but analysts say the numbers required to remove the governor remain elusive.

Political observers note that Cherargei’s intervention highlights the national significance of Nairobi politics, with Sakaja seen as both an ally of the ruling coalition and a rising political figure in the capital. By terming the impeachment threats a “political blunder,” Cherargei has effectively thrown his weight behind the governor while warning the MCAs of the risks of destabilising county leadership.

As the number of days window he mentioned ticks away, the focus will now be on whether the Nairobi MCAs will make good on their threats or whether the impeachment talk will fizzle out as another episode of political brinkmanship in Kenya’s capital.
