Saboti Member of Parliament (MP) Caleb Amisi has welcomed a new voter registration initiative announced by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), praising the move as a step toward empowering young people ahead of the next general election.

Taking to his official X account on the night of Wednesday, March 4, 2026, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) lawmaker lauded the electoral body after its chairperson, Erastus Ethekon, revealed that the commission would conduct a special voter registration exercise at Uhuru Park during the upcoming People’s Dialogue Festival.

The registration drive, scheduled to run from March 4 to March 7, 2026, is primarily aimed at attracting young voters, particularly members of the Gen Z demographic, many of whom are eligible to vote for the first time.

Ethekon’s approach praised

Amisi praised Ethekon’s approach, suggesting that the new IEBC leadership appeared to understand the aspirations of younger Kenyans.

“This new IEBC chair seems to be walking and talking the language of the future generations,” Amisi stated.

The outspoken MP went further to commend the electoral chief for initiating a platform that directly engages young people in the democratic process.

“You may just be the first IEBC chair in the history of Kenyan democracy to be celebrated more than the president-elect,” Amisi added.

Amisi also used the moment to rally young Kenyans to take advantage of the voter registration exercise, urging them to turn out in large numbers and register as voters.

“Gen Z, come out and register as voters, ready to remove someone from office,” he said.

The IEBC’s decision to set up a registration centre at Uhuru Park during the People’s Dialogue Festival is widely seen as a strategic move to reach young citizens who often participate in civic forums, debates, and activism surrounding governance and accountability.

Kenya’s youth population forms a significant share of the country’s electorate, but voter registration and turnout among young people has historically fluctuated, prompting repeated calls for targeted civic engagement initiatives.

Taking to his official X account on Wednesday, March 4, 2025, Ethekon, while using a language that is more appealing to the young generation, announced that IEBC would pitch camp at Uhuru Park to register voters.

Mlisema Siri ni Numbers, tumewaskia! Tumewaletea voter registration hapo Uhuru Park kutoka 4th hadi 7th March, kwenye People’s Dialogues Festival. Tunakuja Kubanja!” Ethekon stated.

The People’s Dialogue Festival

The People’s Dialogue Festival has increasingly become a platform where leaders, activists, policymakers, and citizens converge to discuss governance, democracy, and development.

By integrating voter registration into the event, the IEBC hopes to capitalize on the presence of politically conscious young Kenyans already participating in national discourse.

The commission has, in recent months, been under pressure to rebuild public trust and accelerate preparations for future elections following leadership changes and institutional challenges that affected its operations in previous years.
