Saboti MP Caleb Amisi has criticized President William Ruto’s frequent meetings with leaders from the Western region, arguing that these meetings have not resulted in any tangible development projects for the area.

In a statement shared on his X account on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, Amisi expressed frustration over the lack of progress, despite the numerous engagements between the president and Luhya leaders.

“I have lost count on the number of times the president has had meetings with Luhya MPs, but what I am yet to count is any single project initiated in Western courtesy of these meetings,” Amisi stated.

The legislator, who revealed that he had not been invited to these meetings, questioned why the region remains underdeveloped despite having strong political representation in government.

“Of course, they avoided inviting me for reasons best known to them, but isn’t it about time we now see these projects?” he posed.

Amisi emphasized the need for equitable distribution of resources across all regions, warning that the continued marginalization of certain areas could undermine national unity.

“Equalization of funds to all regions of the country is key for the cohesiveness of a nation. Western is still lagging behind in development despite enormous support from our brothers in government,” he added.

The outspoken MP called for a “renaissance” in Kenya’s governance approach, insisting that rhetoric and political posturing should be replaced with action-oriented leadership that delivers results for all Kenyans.

Ruto’s engagement with Western leaders

Amisi’s remarks come after Ruto defended his meetings with leaders from Western Kenya, stating that they are aimed at accelerating development in the region and ensuring equitable progress across the country.

In a statement following a meeting with some leaders from the region at State House, Nairobi, on March 26, 2025, Ruto said the discussions focused on assessing the progress of key priority projects and addressing implementation challenges.

“We are engaging leaders from across the country to accelerate the implementation of our national development agenda, ensuring no region is left behind,” he stated.

According to Ruto, a key topic of discussion was the strengthening of agricultural value chains, particularly increasing fertilizer uptake to boost food production.

“These include strengthening agricultural value chains, particularly increasing fertilizer uptake to boost food production and reviving the sugar and coffee sectors in the region,” Ruto said.

Other discussed topics included infrastructure development, such as expanding road networks, increasing power connections, and completing fresh produce markets to enhance trade and create employment opportunities.

Additionally, universal health coverage featured prominently, with Ruto reaffirming his commitment to ensuring all Kenyans have access to affordable healthcare services.

The president also underscored the need for improved access to clean and safe water, noting that ongoing initiatives aim to address water shortages in Western Kenya.

“We also discussed urgent infrastructure needs, including roads, power connections, and ongoing fresh produce markets. Other areas of focus were universal health coverage and projects that will improve access to clean water,” Ruto stated.

The meeting was attended by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, Co-operatives and MSMEs Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya, and Health Cabinet Secretary Debora Barasa.
