President William Ruto has held a consultation discussion with leaders from Western Kenya at State House, Nairobi, in a bid to fast-track the implementation of Kenya’s national development agenda and ensure equitable progress across all regions.

In a statement after the meeting on Thursday, March 26, 2025, Ruto disclosed that the discussions focused on evaluating the progress of key priority projects in the region and addressing existing challenges to their implementation.

“We are engaging leaders from across the country to accelerate the implementation of our national development agenda, ensuring no region is left behind,” he said.

“Today at @StateHouseKenya, Nairobi, held consultations with leaders from Western Kenya to assess progress on key priority projects.

According to the president, a major highlight of the talks was the strengthening of agricultural value chains, particularly increasing fertiliser uptake to enhance food production.

In addition, Ruto revealed that the national government is keen on reviving the struggling sugar and coffee sectors in the region.

“These include strengthening agricultural value chains, particularly increasing fertiliser uptake to boost food production and reviving the sugar and coffee sectors in the region,” Ruto stated.

The leaders also discussed urgent infrastructure development, including the expansion and improvement of road networks, power connections, and the completion of fresh produce markets. These initiatives are expected to facilitate trade, enhance connectivity, and create employment opportunities in the region.

Universal health coverage also featured prominently in the consultations, with Ruto reaffirming his commitment to ensuring that all citizens, regardless of their location, have access to quality and affordable healthcare services.

The head of state further disclosed that discussions focused on improving access to clean and safe water, emphasising ongoing initiatives to address water shortages in Western Kenya.

“We also discussed urgent infrastructure needs, including roads, power connections and ongoing fresh produce markets. Other areas of focus were universal health coverage and projects that will improve access to clean water,” Ruto stated.

Leaders present during the meeting included Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, Cabinet Secretary for Co-operatives and MSMEs Wycliffe Oparanya, and his health counterpart, Debora Barasa.

Also in attendance were governors from Kakamega, Fernandes Barasa; Bungoma, Ken Lusaka; and Busia, Paul Otuoma, as well as a section of members of Parliament from the region.
