Kileleshwa Ward MCA Robert Alai has accused former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of hypocrisy, questioning why he appears to be concerned about the fate of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) when he has historically been opposed to the party.

In a statement posted on his X account on Sunday, January 12, 2026, Alai dismissed Gachagua’s recent remarks on ODM as disingenuous and politically self-serving.

“A man who hates ODM with a passion, whining how Ruto is finishing ODM,” Alai wrote.

The outspoken MCA argued that any weakening of ODM would politically benefit Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), which the former deputy president leads, and questioned why he would now seek to portray himself as a defender of the Orange party.

“The death of ODM is an opportunity for DCP. Why is the DCP owner pretending to suddenly care for ODM?” Alai posed, ending his remarks with a dismissive “Maajabu!”.

Plans to split ODM

Alai’s comments were in response to recent claims by Gachagua accusing President William Ruto of plotting to divide and weaken ODM.

Speaking in Gatundu South, Kiambu County, on January 11 during a church service, Gachagua claimed that President Ruto had dispatched Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho to demand the ODM party leadership.

According to Gachagua, if Joho’s bid for party leadership is rejected, he would be expected to break away and form a new political outfit at the Coast.

“He has decided to divide and finish ODM. He has instructed Joho and Oparanya to demand being party leaders. If they are not made party leaders, they should start their own parties. Ruto want to make ODM a Luo party,” Gachagua stated.
