KRA urges taxpayers to clear balances ahead of April 30 deadline
The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has reminded individual and corporate taxpayers to settle outstanding tax balances by April 30, 2026. The notice indicates that failure to comply will result in penalties and interest.
In a public notice shared on its official X account on April 25, 2026, KRA stated, “Clear any outstanding balance by 30th April 2026 to avoid penalties and interest. Don’t wait, pay today!”
The reminder comes with a few days remaining before the deadline.
Instalment tax obligations remain in force for businesses, with payments required in four equal instalments on or before the 20th day of the fourth, sixth, ninth, and twelfth months of an accounting year. Individuals are required to pay in a lump sum, except in cases where annual tax exceeds Sh40,000, where instalment options apply.
Payment process through iTax platform
KRA has outlined the process for settling tax balances through its iTax system. Taxpayers are required to log in using their KRA PIN or National ID and password, then navigate to the payment registration section to initiate the process.
Payment details must include the tax head, sub-head, payment type, tax period, and amount before submission. Upon completion, the system generates a Payment Registration Number (PRN), which is used to complete payment.
Payments can be made through designated banks or via mobile money using Paybill number 222222, with the PRN entered as the account number. The authority directed that all payments be made using the official paybill to ensure accuracy in processing.

Monitoring systems and enforcement measures
The authority continues to implement monitoring systems aimed at strengthening compliance. Kenya participates in the Common Reporting Standard (CRS), which facilitates automatic exchange of financial account information across multiple jurisdictions.
Locally, KRA uses systems including the Electronic Tax Invoicing Management System (eTIMS), mobile money transaction analysis, banking data, and integration with government platforms to support compliance checks. These systems are used to reconcile declared income with financial activity.
KRA has also introduced a WhatsApp-based filing service, Shuru, to support submission of returns for employment income.
The April 30 payment deadline comes ahead of the June 30, 2026 filing deadline for annual returns, with the authority continuing to provide guidance on compliance requirements.
