Kenya Airways (KQ) has resumed direct flights to the Mozambican capital Maputo after a four-year hiatus.

The national carrier on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, announced the resumption of flights to Maputo, saying the flights to Maputo are set to happen three times a week.

In a statement on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, the Principal Secretary for the State Department for Transport Mohamed Daghar flagged off the flights from the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to Maputo.

“This morning, joined by PS Foreign Affairs Sing’Oei Korir, we had the honour of flagging off direct flights between Nairobi and Maputo by our national carrier, Kenya Airways,” Daghar said.

Also present during the launch were Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) Chairman Caleb Kositany, Ambassador of Mozambique to Kenya, Jeronimo Chivavi, and KQ CEO Allan Kilavuka among other leaders.

He added: “The relaunch from Nairobi directly to Maputo, is not only enhancing travel and trade between Kenya and Mozambique but also opening new avenues for tourism, business, and cultural exchange.”

Flights schedule

The flights between the two capitals will run three times a week, on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, according to Kenya Airways.

A state-owned company that manages Mozambican Airlines (Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique (LAM)) remarked that the resumption of flights to and from Nairobi was a good move that would boost business between the two countries.

“Mozambican companies will have faster access to international markets, strengthening supply chains and increasing competitiveness,” the statement read, “the direct flight will facilitate the arrival of tourists from Kenya and other destinations connected by Nairobi, promoting Mozambique as an attractive tourist destination.”

On their part, KQ noted that Mozambique was a great option for Kenyans wishing to explore the African continent.

“Maputo is renowned for its beautiful beaches stretching across the city’s coastal line, unique history and culture, as well as unmatched vibrant energy,” a statement from the KQ website reads.

Mozambique boasts a blend of both African and Portuguese history and cultural heritage with colonial architecture and bustling markets stocked with local crafts and vibrant neighbourhoods.

The country also has the Maputo-Katembe bridge considered the longest twin-tower suspension bridge in Africa, which connects the city of Maputo and its suburb Katembe, providing easy access beyond Maputo.

Away from being considered an engineering marvel, the bridge offers stunning panoramic views of Maputo Bay and the surrounding landscape.
