Kenyan Jude Chesire elected to lead global sugar body
By Kiprono Keileb, November 28, 2025Kenya has recorded a major global achievement after Kenya Sugar Board CEO Jude Chesire was elected to chair the International Sugar Organisation (ISO) in 2026. The announcement has been described as a historic moment, marking the first time a Kenyan, and the first time an African, will lead the world’s top sugar governance body based in London.
In a detailed statement posted on Facebook on Friday, November 28, 2025, the Kenya Sugar Board celebrated the development, calling it a significant milestone for both the country and the continent.
The board said Chesire’s election signals global confidence in the reforms and recovery efforts taking place in Kenya’s sugar industry.
“Kenya has scored one of its biggest global wins in decades after Kenya Sugar Board CEO Jude Chesire was unanimously elected Chairman of the Council of the International Sugar Organization (ISO) for 2026, becoming the first Kenyan and the first African to ever hold the top seat of the world’s leading sugar governance body headquartered in London and affiliated to the World Trade Organization (WTO),” the statement reads
The board noted that Chesire’s rise comes at a time when Africa is positioning itself as a major player in global sugar production and trade. It said his election also reflects international recognition of Kenya’s sector reforms led by Agriculture and Livestock Development Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe.
“Chesire’s election, taking over from Edgar Herrera of Costa Rica, cements Kenya’s arrival on the global sugar stage at a defining moment when the continent is positioning itself as a major producer, exporter, and value-addition hub,” the statement reads.
The board highlighted key reforms, including the leasing of four state-owned sugar mills and the expansion of cane farming. It noted that sugar production has gone up by 76 per cent and farmers are now earning better prices.
“Four state-owned sugar mills- Sony, Muhoroni, Chemelil and Nzoia- have been leased to a private operator. Sugar production has jumped by 76 per cent. Cane prices have risen from Ksh4,350 to Ksh5,750 per tonne,” the statement reads
Tasks ahead
Chesire will now oversee major responsibilities, including the recruitment of the next Executive Director.
“As Chairman of the world’s premier sugar organisation, Chesire will hold direct responsibility for recruiting a New Executive Director & CEO and steering the rewrite of the ISO Constitution,” the statement reads
The board emphasised that his leadership gives Kenya an upper hand in shaping global sugar policy and strengthening Africa’s voice in commodity markets.
“His election affirms that Kenya is no longer just a participant in global agriculture; it is now a leader shaping the future of the sector,” the statement reads
With Kenya targeting sugar self-sufficiency by 2027, the board said Chesire’s elevation places the country in a strategic position to negotiate better trade terms, attract investment, and push for standards that uplift farmers.
