Kenya Airways diverts JKIA-bound flights due to poor visibility
Kenya Airways (KQ) has diverted select flights from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) to Moi International Airport, Mombasa.
In an update to its customers on Friday, April 10, 2026, Kenya Airways announced expected delays for departures and arrivals.
The carrier has explained that the delays are due to low visibility affecting operations at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO).
“We wish to inform our customers to expect some flight delays for departures and arrivals due to low visibility affecting operations at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO),” KQ said.
Meanwhile, while flight diversions are rare, they require immediate action to ensure safety; hence, airlines must make quick decisions to protect passengers and crew.
According to the national carrier, the flight diversion was a necessary step towards the safety precaution of ensuring the safety of all on board.
“Some of our flights have been diverted to Moi International Airport, Mombasa. Flight diversion is a necessary safety precaution to ensure the safety of all onboard and remains our highest priority,” KQ noted.
While apologising for the delays, the company has said it is closely monitoring the situation and will adjust its flight network and operations as soon as the weather conditions improve.
“Our teams are closely monitoring the situation and will adjust our flight network and operations as soon as the weather conditions improve. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused and appreciate our customers’ patience and understanding,” KQ explained.

Recent diverted flights
Meanwhile, the Kenya Airways flight KQ254, flying from Nairobi to Dzaoudzi in Mayotte, was recently diverted to Moroni in the Comoros on March 15, 2026, after the runway at Dzaoudzi Airport was closed.
Airport authorities shut the runway after a disabled third-party aircraft blocked it, preventing any landings. The crew followed standard safety procedures and chose to divert to Moroni’s Prince Said Ibrahim Airport (HAH) rather than circle or risk attempting a landing. The aircraft refuelled there while awaiting updates from Dzaoudzi.
The plane landed safely in Moroni at around 1400 local time. There were no reports of injuries or other issues.
“In line with standard safety procedures, the flight crew elected to divert to Moroni while awaiting further updates from the destination airport authorities,” Kenya Airways Corporate Communications said in an official statement.
