President, his successor finally hold phone conversation on transition plans
Outgoing President Uhuru Kenyatta yesterday spoke on phone with President-elect William Ruto, the first conversation since the latter was declared the winner of the August 9 election.
Ruto broke the news of his conversation with Uhuru in a tweet yesterday morning, referring to the latter as “my boss” and revealing that the talks centered around the General Election and the handover ceremony slated for next Tuesday.
“I had a telephone conversation with my boss, President Uhuru Kenyatta. We discussed the just concluded General Election and the transition as envisaged by our democratic tradition and practice,” Ruto posted on Twitter.
Ruto (pictured) had on Monday indicated that he would reach out to the President and Azimio la Umoja presidential candidate Raila Odinga.
Speaking during his acceptance speech after the Supreme Court affirmed his victory, Ruto revealed he had not spoken to Uhuru “for months”.
Addressing the nation following the Supreme Court ruling on Monday, Uhuru promised to obey the verdict and ensure the democratic wheels turn as expected by the Constitution.
“When I was sworn in as your President, I made a pledge to uphold the rule of law and the decisions made by the judiciary,” he said.
Although the President chose to back Raila as his preferred successor despite an earlier agreement to support Ruto, the latter has said both Uhuru and Raila would be given their due respect.
“We will respect our President in retirement. We are honourable people, we are not petty and not jealous. He has done a good job and he will have a good place in the history of Kenya,” he said on Monday.
